“This Is Us” Star Being Kevin’s Mystery Romance: “This Isn’t The End, This Is Really The Beginning”

[This story contains spoilers to the April 26 episode of NBC’s This Is Us, “The Night Before the Wedding.”]

There are four episodes left for the series finale. It’s usKevin Pearson has finally found his happy life.

The previous episode caused a bit of a stir in Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) love life as he was dating a single who spent the night with her friend Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison), a wedding singer (played by Katie Louise) or her ex. . . -Wife Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge). Kevin and the entire Pearson clan arrived at the hotel for Kate’s (Chris Metz) second marriage to Philip (Chris Giri), while single Kevin had a love affair.

But as Tuesday’s heart hour finally revealed, this woman turned out to be a fan-favorite choice: Kevin’s constant love, but always friend, Sophie. And before he got there, he went down a winding road.

“Kevin has such a huge character arc in terms of growth,” said Breckenridge. the hollywood reporter Watch the final season, along with viewers, and see how the Pearson brothers become the person their character always hoped they would be, now in their 40s. “It took years,” he says. “The character was so into himself and he really wanted to stay out. It was very difficult for him to get out of his own way. But it finally came, came a way of being, and changed to a completely different path.

Kevin’s adult romances were nothing short of heartbreaking. More recently, after ending his marriage to the twins’ mother Madison (Caitlin Thompson), flash-forwards in recent episodes have shown Kevin is back on track with his series acquaintance, especially after trying to get Cassidy’s approval in a bad time. . As he explains to his childhood sweetheart Sophie in “The Night Before the Wedding,” all subsequent attempts at a relationship were unsuccessful. But Sophie needs to see the changes with her own eyes to convince her.

Over the course of the series, Breckenridge was returning to the Kevin and Sophie arcs when he got it. It’s us A callout that will appear in a certain position across all six seasons. In the first season, they showed a teenage reunion, more than ten years after young Kevin cheated on Sophie to end their marriage. But the couple broke up, again in the second season. Subsequent appearances brought Sophie back from Kevin, who was unsure of a new relationship, at her doorstep; Due to her mother’s death in season five; And, now in its sixth and final season, for attending Kate’s wedding, first at an engagement party with her husband, followed by Sophie alone months later over the wedding weekend.

Alexandra Breckinridge (here as Sophie with Justin Hartley Kevin in “The Night Before the Wedding”) says of her return: “It’s like a once-in-a-lifetime job and the fact that the show is, if you will, just the cherries they are. successful in that.”

Breckenridge says creator Dan Fogelman planned to reconcile Kevin and Sophie earlier in the series. So, “I think in season five, I had a conversation with Dan where he said, ‘So we want to keep it that way.’ But we weren’t sure how it would all turn out,” he says.

Things got complicated, Breckenridge got the lead role in the Netflix series virgin river, which at the time was planning to film its first and second seasons in Vancouver. He managed to remake the episode of Sophie’s mother’s funeral, but then a pandemic hit and brought all production to a halt. Finally, virgin river It was one of the first series to resume production, and during the filming of season three, he says it became clear he had no plans to return from Canada to Los Angeles, where It’s us Cinema, by COVID-19.

“It’s us He came in and said, ‘We want Alex to come back for as many episodes.’ But I couldn’t do it. “And that was a terribly happy problem,” he said. “But once we knew it wasn’t going to happen, I think they quickly started coming up with a different plan so that Kevin and Sophie could finally end up together. They said, “Okay. So it won’t happen like that. We’ll do it like this.”

As a result, the two took a little longer to get back together. But as time passed, both Kevin and Sophie were able to come to their senses. When the couple is reunited at Kate’s wedding, Sophie is happily separated and the traveling nurse takes inspiration from her late mother, while Kevin starts a construction company, inspired by his late father, and thrives on his father’s role as a friend. With Madison.

“I think it was worth it in the end because it gave both characters more growth as two individuals. And I think that’s the best way to bring people together, it’s solitude, before investing in falling in love with someone”, she says about her love story.

Breckenridge says he’s grateful that two plays were able to work with him to return for these latest episodes, as Sophie will continue to appear in the series finale. If he couldn’t see this story, he says he would be “devastated”. However, his partner took a lighter approach. “He laughed at me when he came to do the show:mystical river, virgin mount “What are you doing that is breaking the whole story?” he shared with a laugh. “He continued to complain for several seasons as if he didn’t know the name of the show.”

Viewers have long been looking for Kevin and Sophie to find their way to each other and have finally decided to talk to Kevin’s mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Sophie’s wedding party. Rebecca, who has early Alzheimer’s, thinks she’s talking to young Sophie when she tells her that eventually, when the time comes and if she’s patient, Kevin will become the man Sophie always wanted. A few minutes later, Sophie calls Kevin for a monologue and tells him that she wants to fall in love with the man he’s become.

“Rebecca almost sees the present. You think she sees the future, but it’s the present. “And what he’s saying now is so powerful and influential in the present that it forces Sophie to take that leap again,” Breckenridge said.

He continues: “I think Sophie was always there and always more willing to be in a relationship than Kevin could be in a relationship with her because Kevin was in orbit around her and around her. It couldn’t seem to her that he needed her, or that they both needed a steady relationship. I think it’s really wonderful how it all turned out. I think Kevin’s story really needed to go this journey independently to finally be able to build this strong relationship.”

The episode does not fill the void left by Sophie and her husband’s divorce. Breckenridge says there was a version of how it all ended, but it ended up failing. Instead, he shares his own opinion.

“Sophie’s heart has always belonged to Kevin,” he says. “She was ready to give him a chance at 30 and get back together, and she ended up having an addiction problem. At that point, he said firmly, “Well, it’s done for me. I have to find someone who can introduce himself to me, who appreciates me.’ And he found out. She found a man who was steady and kind, but just wasn’t in love with her. So when he comes back and sees Kevin [at the wedding]I think he really secretly hopes that maybe something has changed. “And when they meet again, he realizes that everything has changed and he still takes that leap because he never stopped thinking about it and it was always for him.”

Only four episodes left It’s us Pearson has completed many scenarios, especially as he flash-forwards when the family enters a luxurious cabin built by Rebecca next to Kevin’s bed, seen on a wedding band when they spot a future date? Breckenridge says he’s looking forward to more trailers, noting that viewers will see Sophie on a few dates before the finale.

“It’s bittersweet because you’re happy that Kevin and Sophie are finally together, but at the same time you realize there’s no time to see them together. “Especially with Rebecca’s illness and her rapid decline, there are a lot of places to cover,” he said. “But Sophie is still very supportive of Kevin and his family, I mean, they’re his family too. I think he feels extremely connected to them; “They really grew up together.”
