How to put on a thermometer to correctly measure the temperature – not everyone knows these special conditions!

Not everyone trusts non-contact thermometers – many still prefer to put a thermometer under their arm, suspecting you have signs of illness. It would seem that nothing complicated. However, measuring temperature correctly is not as easy as is commonly believed.

The diagnosis and the decision to consult a doctor depend on the correctly measured temperature. Despite the proliferation of electronic and infrared thermometers, many trust only “old-fashioned” mercury thermometers. Surprise: even though it has been used for a long time in the family, it is not a fact that it is used correctly! Here are the rules to know before taking your temperature. Their knowledge will not harm those who use an electronic contact thermometer.

Coaching:

  1. Make sure the air temperature in the room is not below 18 or above 25 degrees Celsius
  2. Shake the thermometer well so that the column falls correctly (if you have a mercury one) or turn on the electronics, making sure that it is not discharged, and an indicator appears on the screen
  3. Carefully wipe the skin under the armpit – so that the thermometer does not get cold due to evaporation of sweat
  4. Disinfect the thermometer

How to properly install a thermometer under the arm? It is necessary to put its tip in the deepest place and immediately press the elbow – this is done so that the measuring device does not come into contact with air. The tip of the thermometer should not rest against clothing or bedding, or just stick out under your arm.

How long does it take to take a temperature?

Doctors call the optimal duration of the procedure – from 6 to 10 minutes. During all this time, it is important not to change the position of the body and, most importantly, the thermometer.

The electronic thermometer beeps when it has finished measuring, but do not rush to remove it – it should remain in place for another 2-3 minutes, this is the principle of its operation. If you remove it immediately after hearing the signal, the result will be distorted.

What can cause a thermometer to show the wrong temperature?

You do not need to measure the temperature if:

  • the man just came home from the street
  • ate or drank a hot drink
  • cry

Readings can be skewed.

While the thermometer is doing its job under the arm, you should not eat or talk. It is better to sit comfortably lying down and be quiet.
