Amazon will largely fold in the Indian market.
In a glowing showcase in Mumbai on Thursday, the company unveiled a huge slate of 40 new titles, including original series, films and co-productions. Slate includes designs in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, the entire collection will launch in India within the next 24 months.
The announcement marked Amazon Prime Video’s fifth anniversary in the Indian market, with the company saying it would “double” its investment in Indian content over the next half-decade.
Amazon has also signed content licensing deals with major Indian manufacturers including Ajay Devgn FFilms, Dharma Productions, Excel Entertainment and Yash Raj Films.
Indian actors Abhishek Bachchan and Sumukh Suresh will host the event, which will be attended by several Amazon executives, including Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios; Kelly Day, Vice President of International Premiere Video; And James Farrell, Head of Local Originals at Amazon Studios, as well as India Local Team Leaders Gaurav Gandhi, Head of State, Amazon Prime Video India; Aparna Purohit, Director of Indian Originals, and Sushant Sriram, Director of SVOD India.
The new film and series projects span a wide range of genres, from thrillers, action, dramas, comedies and romances to supernatural and horror titles for young audiences, as well as biographies, true crimes and investigative documentaries.
In a side announcement, Amazon said it would increase its video offerings in India by adding a movie rental service on the Indian platform, Prime Video Store, with its Transaction Video Request (TVOD).
