Over 1 billion: the incredible viewership numbers of the 2022 World Cup

A report released by FIFA points out that there were almost 6 billion engagements on the networks related to the tournament held in Qatar

FIFA released a report with a series of numbers related to the 2022 World Cup, held in Qatar. The most impressive information is related to the audience: according to the institution, 1.5 billion people watched the final of the tournament, with Argentina’s victory over France on penalties.

For comparison purposes, the final of the UEFA Champions League, Europe’s club tournament, accumulates an overall 400 million live viewers. The Super Bowl LVI, the decisive match of the American football league in the United States, had a little less than 200 million fans connected to the screen. All numbers consider worldwide audiences.

In the age of social networks, the numbers related to the virtual presence of the Cup are also very high. According to FIFA, there were nearly 6 billion engagements across digital platforms, with 262 billion cumulative reach across all of them. There were more than 93.6 million posts, according to a Nielsen survey replicated by the federation.

In the stadiums, around 3.4 million spectators followed the matches — above the 3 million of the Cup in Russia in 2018. Three games at Estádio Lusail, including the final, had the highest attendance in a match recorded in a Cup since the edition held in 1994 in the United States, when Brazil played against Italy in front of 94,194 present at the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena.

Other notable brands highlighted by FIFA include:
