The Last of Us: What’s the difference between Ellie and Sarah for Joel?

Ellie and Sarah have a lot more in common than being Joel’s daughter figures in The Last of Us.

In the very first episode of The Last of Uswe see Joel (Pedro Pascal) see the daughter, Sarah (Nico Parker), brutally die in front of him, on the first day of the zombie pandemic caused by the fungus Cordyceps. Then, 20 years later, he begins to rediscover himself as a father when he meets the young woman. Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and take it to the other side of the United States on a mission requested by the Fireflies.

“See, at the beginning of the episode, when Joel hits the old lady over the head with the wrench. Sarah is horrified and cries,” he said. “Even though that woman was trying to kill her, basically. And she says, ‘You killed her.’ She can’t believe what she just saw. She just saw her father murder someone.”

Ellie sees something that isn’t a scam, and that guy wasn’t even threatening Joel’s life. And he beats him to death. She punches him repeatedly. AND Ellie is activated. And that will echo forward,” continued Craig Mazin. “This is something that Neil and I talked a lot, which went to understand where Ellie goes and what is the connection between Joel and Ellie.”

[A conexão] that there’s a thread between them that’s more than just, ‘I used to have a daughter and you’re a daughter too.’ There is something else. That there is already a connection between Joel and Ellie which is different from his connection to his own daughter, and perhaps potentially stronger and certainly potentially more dangerous.
