Launched this week, the two series approach, even if in different ways, the drama of the families and victims of the fire at the Kiss nightclub
Around 2:30 am on January 27, 2013, the band’s vocalist fandangueira crowd lit a flag on the stage of the Kiss nightclub, in Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul. What was supposed to be a fireworks show, however, became one of the most remembered tragedies in the country, which is now 10 years old.
THE kiss nightclub fire killed 242 young people — and another 636 people were injured at the scene. This is because, while overcrowding prevented the victims from leaving the environment, the sparks from the flare reached the ceiling of the nightclub, igniting the insulation foam and intoxicating those present with cyanide smoke.
In total, four people were accused of the fire, including the two partners of the nightclub, the lead singer and the assistant of the band that played that night. All, however, had their convictions annulled in August 2022. And that’s exactly the story told by two productions recently released on streaming.
Every Day, Same Night – Netflix
Based on the book of the same title published by Daniela Arbex in 2018, the new miniseries debuted last Wednesday, the 25th. In total, there are five episodes that narrate from the tragedy that occurred that day in 2013, to the investigations and the journey of the families of the victims in the search for justice.
With script by Gustavo Lipsztein and direction of Julia Rezende, the series is based on the real events surrounding the fire. In this way, actors and scenes, to some extent, fictitious, are used to portray the real story of some of the young people who died that night and whose families were in court.
Featuring actors like Paulo Gorgulho, Debora Lamm, Bianca Byington and Raquel Karro, all interpreters of parents who lost their children that night, the miniseries has taken over social networks — mainly for simulating the drama of real stories that occurred before, during and after the fire. Nightclub Kiss: The Tragedy of Santa Maria – Globoplay
Unlike the plot launched by Netflixthe production of Globoplay is a documentary series that investigates what happened in Kiss nightclub 10 years ago. Thus, in addition to recreating the terror of that night, the plot still features images of real coverage of the time, true interviews and a journalistic point of view of the case.
It is important to point out that the new docuseries was produced and presented by the reporter Marcelo Canellas, who graduated as a journalist at the Federal University of Santa Maria — the same college where most of the fire victims studied. Directly linked to the case, shanks covered the tragedy up close and, 10 years later, revisited the Kiss nightclub and her sad history that she may not be forgotten.
Emphasizing the judicial process of the case, which remains unpredictable, the documentary series was launched last Thursday, the 26th. In five chapters of one hour each, the production features exclusive testimonials from people who were at the Kiss nightclub that day, as well as never-before-seen footage of the fire.
