A 25-year-old worker named Danish has died from severe burns after falling into a vat of boiling sugar at a facility in Maharashtra, India.
The fatal accident occurred during the production of jaggery, a traditional unrefined sugar, according to news agency Need To Know. Danish is believed to have suffered a sudden spell of dizziness while working near the vessel, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the scalding sugar vat.
Maharashtra, located in western India, is the country's second-most populous state and a major center for agriculture. The state is one of India's largest producers of sugarcane, supporting a vast network of commercial sugar mills alongside small-scale processing plants that manufacture traditional raw sugar products.
Rescue efforts at the factory
Colleagues rushed to the scene immediately after hearing Danish scream from inside the vat. Co-workers initially attempted to scoop him out of the container using large ladles, but the long utensils proved unsuccessful in pulling him to safety.
Workers ultimately pulled Danish out of the container using their bare hands. He remained submerged in the boiling jaggery for almost a minute before his colleagues were able to extract him.
After being pulled from the vat, Danish was laid on the ground while colleagues tried to comfort him as he screamed in pain. He was rushed to a hospital with severe burn injuries, but medical staff were unable to save him.
Jaggery manufacturing involves heating unrefined sugarcane juice or palm sap in large open vats over heavy fires. During the evaporation process, temperatures in the boiling vats reach extreme levels as the liquid gradually thickens into a dense syrup.
Family support and debt obligations
Danish had moved to work at the processing plant specifically to help his older brother pay off an outstanding debt. He is survived by his wife and their two-month-old son.
Jaggery is a traditional non-centrifugal sugar widely consumed in India and other South Asian nations. Unlike refined white sugar, it is made without separating the natural molasses, giving it a distinctive dark brown color and a caramel flavor with a mild bitterness. It is used extensively in regional cooking, traditional sweets, and as a popular alternative sweetener.

The tragedy follows another severe workplace fatality previously reported in South Australia, where 26-year-old worker Josh Thomson-Parkin died inside an industrial woodchipper. His remains were later discovered by his father on the job site.
