Former American Idol finalist Antonella Barba has been arrested in New Jersey after allegedly shoplifting from a Target store, marking the latest legal trouble for the former reality television contestant. The 39-year-old singer was charged after law enforcement officers were called to the Target location in the Seaview Square Shopping Center in Ocean Township on August 10, according to local news outlet NJ.com.
Police were summoned to the retail store following reports that Barba had allegedly concealed items worth less than $200 inside a bag while moving in and out of a fitting room and a restroom. Officers approached her outside the store immediately after she exited the bathroom, where they allegedly found the stolen merchandise inside her bag. She has pleaded not guilty to the charge and is scheduled to appear in Ocean Township Municipal Court on November 18.
Ocean Township is a municipality located along the Jersey Shore in Monmouth County, roughly 50 miles south of New York City. Target Corporation, one of the largest department store operators in the United States, maintains more than 1,900 retail locations nationwide.
Target Shoplifting Allegations and Court Appearance
At the time of her August arrest, Barba was already facing active legal scrutiny. Law enforcement officials noted that she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest connected to a recent domestic violence charge in New Jersey. That warrant ended up violating the conditions of her federal supervised release from a previous drug conviction.
The August incident represents the latest in a series of legal difficulties for the former performer. Her criminal record includes a shoplifting arrest in 2010, a federal conviction for fentanyl distribution in 2018, and multiple domestic violence arrests in recent years.
Federal Fentanyl Conviction and Prison Sentence
Barba experienced her most serious legal case in October 2018, when federal authorities arrested her in Virginia. She was subsequently charged with conspiring to distribute fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times more powerful than heroin and is manufactured for medical pain management as well as illegal distribution.
In 2019, Barba pleaded guilty to federal charges of possessing with intent to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl. Federal prosecutors stated that she had been caught attempting to deliver nearly two pounds of the substance to a drug stash house in Virginia. A federal judge sentenced her to serve nearly four years in prison for the offense.
Barba was released from federal prison in October 2021 and placed on five years of supervised release, according to reporting by TMZ. However, just over a year after her release, her probation officer reported that she had breached her supervision terms. During a routine home visit in August 2022, the officer discovered that Barba had moved out of her approved residence in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, a month earlier in July without obtaining permission. Following the incident, she agreed to abide by a curfew and wear an electronic ankle monitor.
Domestic Violence Arrests and Shelter Incident
Her legal troubles continued into 2025. In March 2025, officers from the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department arrested Barba on a domestic violence charge during a vehicle stop in New Jersey. Point Pleasant Beach is a borough situated along the Atlantic coast in Ocean County.
Court documents revealed that Barba had previously been involved in a domestic violence dispute in November 2024 with an ex-partner identified in filings as "K.H." According to reporting by TMZ, K.H. was accused of striking Barba in the face, causing a wound that split her skin open and required medical stitches.
Her probation officer also disclosed that Barba had been evicted from a domestic violence shelter in January 2024. The shelter removed her after she revealed its confidential location to K.H., thereby compromising the safety of the facility. TMZ reported that police were called to two additional incidents involving Barba and K.H. in the month prior to court filings. As part of her house arrest conditions, a judge ordered Barba to discontinue all contact with K.H. and K.H.'s family.
First Arrest and Social Media Reflections
Barba's initial conflict with law enforcement occurred in December 2010 in New York City. She was arrested for allegedly shoplifting $18.81 worth of gloves from an Urban Outfitters store, a retail chain headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was charged with two misdemeanor counts and sentenced to complete one day of community service.
Following her release from federal prison, Barba publicly discussed her past choices and expressed anxiety about returning to public life. In a statement posted to her Instagram account in 2022, she reflected on her experiences.
"Real Talk: I’ve been scared to put myself out there. To be honest, approaching social media again, after not having access to it for 3 years, brings up a lot of anxiety," she wrote.

American Idol is a televised singing competition created by Simon Fuller that airs nationally across the United States, having launched the careers of major music artists including Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Barba performed her way into the Top 16 contestants before being eliminated from the competition, which was ultimately won by singer Jordin Sparks.
During her appearance on the show in 2007, Barba became involved in public controversy after photos surfaced of her posing in a wet t-shirt inside the fountain at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. The national monument honors American service members who served during World War II. Around the same time, explicit photographs of Barba in various stages of undress were leaked on the internet.
