Manicure without a manicure: why it is more difficult to take care of “bare” nails than gel polishes

The fashion for “naked” nails started during the pandemic and, of course, was forced at first. However, many appreciated naturalness and minimalism, and classic manicure even pressed XXXL and crazy nail art. And that’s why taking care of natural nails is actually more difficult than varnished nails, the expert explained to us.

Why are unvarnished nails more difficult to maintain?

On the one hand, the uncoated manicure has two undeniable advantages. It’s cheaper – saving attracts. In addition, natural, well-groomed and polished nails signal the health and activity of their owner.

But hygienically treated nails without varnish in 5-7 days will not look so fresh: get ready to update the manicure without coating every week. When growing back, the free edge of the nail does not look very sharp, it must be filed and corrected on its own. When we do it in the salon, fixing it with gel polish, the free edge of the nail remains flawless for a long time.

Do you remember how in old movies a woman sitting down to rest takes a nail file from a prominent place and files her nails? The nail file should always be kept ready!

Do you need to let your nails “breathe”?

There is an opinion that you should not wear the coating all the time, and breaks will help the nails to be stronger. At the same time, if you turn to a trusted master who regularly sees your nails and knows their features, properly removes the coating, uses high-quality materials, then it is quite possible to do this without interruptions. The main thing is not to wear the coating for more than 4 weeks, because every day the risk of breaking a nail increases.

If there is a feeling that the nail plate has become thinner, then the reason may not be only in the gel polish. This happens, for example, after illness, antibiotics, prolonged stress. Many have noted deterioration in nail quality after suffering from coronavirus. In this case, it is better to take a break for a few months.

Why does this happen? There are many nerve endings under the nail and its hard surface protects them. The permanently applied coating acts as an outer frame for the nail plate, the nail gets used to this protection and without it starting to “get lazy” – after all, you don’t have to be hard anymore . A suddenly “bare” nail needs time to regain its protective function, but for now it will be brittle and exfoliating.

Like mine, but better!

The “bare nails” trend, as well as “makeup without make-up”, is taking hold, emphasizing natural beauty and grooming. This trend has even been called a “rich girl” because this approach requires more money, time, and effort.

The natural look of the nails is achieved not only by taking care of the cuticle, sufficiently moisturizing and choosing a nude gel polish. One of the main requirements for a harmonious look is to choose a shade of translucent coating that matches the tone and undertone of the skin (cool, warm or mixed).

The length of the nails should also be natural, and the shape should be more rounded and soft, emphasizing the fingertips. These everyday neutral nails have long been worn by Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid, and now they’re popular on the red carpet. Cate Blanchett, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jung Ho Young, Jodie Comer, Margot Robbie and Nicola Peltz also ditched the bright color.

Such a manicure has many advantages: “naked” nails visually lengthen the fingers, harmonize with any outfit and are suitable for any life situation.
