How much to hang in grams: how much cream, toner, serum and oil should be applied to the face

You’ve probably heard that it’s very important to apply skincare cosmetics in the right order: start with light creams, end with heavy creams.

But there is another important nuance that is talked about much less often – this is the amount of each remedy. As dermatologist and physician Marisa Garshik explains, if you use too much of the product, you won’t get the same benefits, but you will run into problems – the cream won’t absorb as it should and the skin may start to peel. or to dry out. .

How Much Skin Care Products Should You Use? Here’s what the experts recommend.

Cleaners

It all depends on the consistency: when it comes to gel, milk or cream cleansers, a hazelnut-sized amount should be used. If you’re using mousse, take a portion the size of a ping-pong ball. If you clean not only the face, but also the neck, double the volume.

Toners, toners and essences

These products are used to moisturize the skin and restore the pH after cleansing. Many girls use cotton pads to apply toners, toners and essences, but experts recommend squeezing cosmetics directly into the palm of your hand and already using your fingers to press them into your face. You will need a cherry-sized amount – enough for one layer.

Serums

Serum bottles tend to be quite small as the formulas use high concentrations of ingredients designed to target specific problem areas. Therefore, a small amount of product is enough for a long time. Dermatologist Cory Hartman recommends using a spot application technique: put a small drop on the nose and one on the chin, a few on the forehead and cheeks, then rub the serum in until completely absorbed.

Eye creams

The area on which the eye cream is applied is small, so you will only need a portion no larger than a lentil. Don’t overdo it: too much can lead to puffiness and puffiness around the eyes.

Moisturizers

The main goal when applying moisturizer is to achieve a thin, even layer that covers your entire face. The amount you need depends on your skin type. “For normal and combination skin, a coin-sized amount of moisturizer two centimeters in diameter works well. If you have dry skin, the product should be a bit more,” says Hartman.

Sunscreens

Only on the face should be applied at least a quarter of a teaspoon of sunscreen, another half – on the neck and décolleté. Remember that UV protection must be reapplied every two to three hours and that a foundation or moisturizer with SPF cannot replace a special product when you spend most of the day in the sun.

Face oils

Oils have the largest molecular size of any skincare product, which is why they are applied at the very end of the procedure. Anything that “sits” on top of the oil, your skin just won’t absorb it. For the face you need two or three drops of oil – they will be enough.
