5 mistakes not to make when peeling: believe me, you should know them!

Peeling can be one of the most enjoyable beauty treatments: it doesn’t matter if you choose chemical or mechanical, either way you’ll feel renewed.

However, exfoliation is the procedure in which the skin is most easily damaged. Don’t want to end up irritated, dry or dull? Avoid these mistakes!

Mistake #1: Too Diligent

Let’s face it, we all have areas on our face that we are particularly unhappy with. No wonder we rub the skin over it too quickly or with excessive pressure, wanting to get the skin as clean and smooth as possible as quickly as possible.

According to dermatologist Rebecca Marcus, the rule that works best with peeling is “slower, slower.” If you’re using a mechanical tool, gently and slowly massage your face, not three like a burnt pan, because your goal is to get rid of dead cells, not living cells.

Mistake #2: Not applying moisturizer

Exfoliation opens the pores and also strips the skin of its natural oil which protects it. Therefore, rehydration is so important – without it it is impossible to restore the protective properties of the skin barrier. Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, recommends applying moisturizer immediately after exfoliating, as well as choosing products containing ceramides and niacinamide.

Mistake #3: Don’t wear sunscreen

Peeling makes the skin more sensitive – after that, ultraviolet radiation is especially dangerous for it. More importantly, sun exposure increases the risk of developing problems ranging from premature aging to cancer. Remember: a “freshly exfoliated” face needs more protection than a “normal” face. Be sure to use the SPF cream after moisturizing – unless, of course, you’re exfoliating at night.

Mistake #4: Exfoliating Too Often

Peeling is like a cake: you might want to eat it every day, but in the long run it’s not in your best interest. Dermatologist Lian Mak advises exfoliating your skin once a week if you have dry or sensitive skin, and twice if you have combination, normal, or oily skin.

Mistake #5: Ignoring Your Skin Type

If you don’t use a peel specifically formulated for your skin type, exfoliation will only lead to dryness and irritation. For sensitive skin, only mild chemicals are suitable, for normal and combination skin – chemical and mechanical, in the case of oily skin it is better to choose mechanical. And, of course, never use two different products together – it will only harm the face.
