Construction workers in Belgium discovered a stash of gold valued at 9 million euros while excavating a sewer pipe at CAW Oost-Vlaanderen.
The repair crew stumbled upon the hidden treasure inside a basement wall of an old building in East Flanders. The premises previously belonged to a brewer and are currently used by the social assistance organisation CAW Oost-Vlaanderen.
Laborers carrying out earthworks initially noticed a small piece of gold sticking out of the wall. Upon closer inspection, they uncovered a hidden chest filled with dozens of gold bars and thousands of coins. WP Tech reported that workers at first thought some of the items might simply be ordinary one-euro coins placed alongside gold ingots.
The true scale of the discovery soon became clear. The vault contained more than 40 gold bars and 4,000 gold coins, with preliminary assessments placing the total value of the find at approximately 9 million euros.
Police securing the site
Law enforcement officers arrived at the property shortly after being notified of the discovery. Police documented the items and arranged for the gold to be transferred to a high-security federal storage facility. Authorities also cordoned off the construction site and instructed members of the public to stay clear of the area while work continued.
Investigators have launched an inquiry to determine where the wealth originated and who placed it in the wall. Experts are focusing on the markings and physical characteristics of the gold coins to establish their age and historical background. The prosecutor's office confirmed that formal proceedings have opened, adding that there is currently no evidence of illegal activity.
It remains unknown who originally concealed the treasure or whether the former owner of the brewery was aware of its existence. Construction crews conducted further renovation and demolition work across the site, but no additional valuables were found.
Ownership rules and charity plans
The discovery has raised questions regarding who will ultimately claim the 9 million euro stash. Under Belgian law, rightful owners have a five-year window to assert legal claims over found property, provided the items are not linked to criminal acts.
If no legal owner comes forward and law enforcement finds no evidence of illicit activity, the gold will be divided equally between the property owner and the construction crew. Under that scenario, half of the treasure will go to CAW Oost-Vlaanderen and the remaining half will be distributed among the construction workers.
CAW Oost-Vlaanderen is a regional social welfare organisation in East Flanders that provides guidance, housing, and social assistance to roughly 45,000 people in need each year. Representatives for the group indicated that if they receive their half of the funds, the money will be dedicated entirely to supporting vulnerable local residents.
Similar accidental treasure discoveries
Accidental discoveries of major valuables have made headlines in other recent cases reported by Ukrainian news outlet UNIAN. In California, a blogger purchased an abandoned shipping container for 20,000 dollars without knowing what was inside. The container held a mix of unusual items, including a coffin, fireworks, and a box of snakes, alongside valuable electronics such as dozens of iPhones, MacBooks, PlayStation 5 consoles, and Louis Vuitton accessories. The most valuable item in the container was a Polaris Slingshot three-wheeled vehicle valued at around 50,000 dollars.
In another case in Austria, a plumber called to repair a pipe in a home basement stumbled upon a buried chest containing roughly 30 kilograms of gold coins. Under local arrangements for that discovery, the coins are scheduled to be split between the property owner and the plumber who found them.
