Munchausen syndrome: why Eminem left his mother

Eminem’s real name is Marshal Bruce Matters III. He was born into a family of young musicians who came together based on a love of music, but did not make a successful career.

His mother, Deborah Mathers-Briggs, married early. At the time of her marriage to Marshal Bruce Matters, Jr., she was just over 15 years old. Three years later, she gave birth to her first child. Deborah later said that her labor lasted over 70 hours and became a real hell, which almost cost her her life. Marshal was born in October 1972 in the small town of St. Joseph, Missouri. Soon the family moved to North Dakota, where the father got a job as a hotel manager.

Another uncle, Ronnie, was disgraced from the US Army. He introduced Marshall to rap. Ronnie died shooting himself.

When investigating the living conditions of Eminem’s brother Nathan, school social workers learned that Deborah had accused neighbors of beating her son, blowing up the mailbox, killing her dog and performed satanic rituals. She believed haters had mailed her a tarantula. Deborah repeatedly called the police to verify the absurd allegations against the neighbors. She was deprived of custody of Nathan and the guy lived in foster homes for a year.

Eminem was abused by his peers as a child. When he was nine years old, he was badly beaten by D’Angelo Bailey, a black teenager who played center for his high school basketball team. Eminem suffered a severe head injury, fell into a coma for several days, and then temporarily lost his sight and hearing. The mother sued the school for failing to ensure her son’s safety. However, the judge dismissed the lawsuit on the grounds that the school was protected from such lawsuits by law. The story continued. In the song Brain Damage, Eminem mentions Bailey. He sued the performer, but the judge denied the claim, writing a rap-style conclusion in the form of 10 rhyming lines.

Eminem’s parents separated when he was young. His mother Deborah had mental problems. The performer claimed that she suffers from Munchausen syndrome, which forces her to attribute various illnesses to herself, hoping to attract the attention of those close to her. She repeatedly complained that the boy’s father had abandoned her, but she herself left Marshal (that was Eminem’s name in childhood) in the care of relatives. He believes his great-aunt and uncle raised him. In 1999, Deborah filed a lawsuit against her son, demanding $10 million for calling her a drug addict in a memoir book. She only received $1,600 in the lawsuit.

Eminem failed his ninth grade exams three times when he was young. At 17, he gave up high school. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the performer said he had little knowledge of math and social studies, but still spoke good English and had an excellent vocabulary. The performer says that she read a dictionary as a child, which allows her to rhyme well and write popular texts.
