The end of Twitter’s free blue verification stamp era is causing online discussions and even ridicule. Amazon Prime Video UK used its account to bash network owner Elon Musk with a ‘The Boys’ meme.
The meme refers to a scene from the second season of the series, in which Homelander (Homelander) pushes his son off a roof, encouraging her to “fly”. For those who don’t follow the series, the character is a maniacal superhero (read: supervillain) who considers himself superior to humans. In the caption, the post refers to the phrase that shows the essence of the character: “I’m Captain Homeland. And I can do whatever the fuck I want”. In context, it serves as an allusion to Elon Musk’s capricious leadership on Twitter.
Amazon Prime Video was just one of many notable users who criticized Musk’s efforts to get people to sign up for Twitter Blue, the new subscription service that grants the badge. The Twitter owner even confirmed that he was paying out of pocket to check personalities like Stephen King, LeBron James and William Shatner. Earlier, King had come forward clarifying that he wasn’t paying for the service, after his verification wasn’t turned off.
