The eyes of the world were turned to Westminster Abbey, in London, England this Saturday morning, 6th, on the occasion of the coronation of King Charles III. However, the monarch had a private moment during the ceremony and was “hidden” from more than 2,000 guests and the official broadcast.
With his wife Camilla, Charles went outside and hid behind a custom-made screen for the anointing with oil, the holiest part of the ceremony. The King received the Archbishop of Canterbury’s blessing via a cruet on the coronation spoon and had his hands, chest and head anointed.
The blessing is not broadcast because it is considered a moment between the sovereign and God. Even at the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, the occasion was “hidden”.
Charles stood behind a screen made especially for the coronation and representing the 56 countries that make up the Commonwealth in the shape of a tree.
