Taylor Swift’s visit to Brazil is throwing together a series of unusual events, from huge queues to buy tickets to the war between the singer’s fans and scalpers. Faced with the worrying situation, federal deputy Simone Marquetto (MDB-SP), coordinator of the bench of the Chamber of Sao Paulo, presented a bill to inhibit the violent actions of the money changers.
Dubbed the “Taylor Swift Law,” the bill plans to criminalize ticket sales by scalpers as a way to protect the economy and ensure the legality for events taking place in Brazil. The proposed law provides for a sentence of one to four years of imprisonment, in addition to a fine corresponding to 100 times the value of the tickets announced or seized by the authorities.
“To purchase tickets, consumers can go to physical outlets or use the organizer’s official website,” he told Metrópolis. “However, fans say that unauthorized resellers have bought a large amount of tickets, making it impossible for other consumers to purchase,” he continued. “There are reports that these tickets are being resold on unofficial websites at much higher prices than previously charged.”
The Eras Tour presentations will take place on 18 and 19 at the Estádio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro, and on 24, 25 and 26 November at the Allianz Parque, in São Paulo.
Yet another bill
The San Paolo deputy was not the only one to act. Federal Deputy Pedro Aihara (Patriot-MG) also presented a bill making it a crime to sell tickets at a higher price than the original price, as well as featuring “digital exchange”. This is a common practice on ticket resale websites and apps, where prices are inflated by scalpers.
Furthermore, federal deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP), one of the first to speak out on the matter, communicated on social media that she had submitted an official letter to the Public Ministry of São Paulo (MP-SP) to investigate ticket sales for the concerts of the American singer.
“I have asked to broaden the scope of the existing investigation, of the RBD and Eventim concert, to include the Taylor Swift concert and Ticket For Fun. This violates consumer rights and if an investigation into the MP is already underway on the subject, should be expanded,” he wrote on Twitter.
The money changers were brought to the police station
After several complaints from the queuing public, the Municipal Guard, the Military Police and the Civil Police of São Paulo conducted an action to combat the activity of money changers at the Allianz Parque on Monday (19/6). Operation Limpo Entry mobilized 50 civilian police officers and 25 vehicles, which approached 300 people on the spot.
As a result, the authorities took 25 suspects to the 1st Police Station of the Consumer Infringement Investigation Division (DIICC). Shortly after being interrogated, the defendants were released. The action also seized 20 bank cards and a car.
In addition, Procon (Consumer Protection and Defense Foundation) also notified Ticket For Fun, the company responsible for Taylor Swift’s arrival in Brazil. The organization said it was attentive to irregularities and was looking for ways to guarantee the protection of citizens’ rights.
