After Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are also starting to charge for verified badges

In an initiative similar to Twitter Blue recently launched by Elon Musk, Facebook and Instagram began testing Meta Verified on Tuesday (20th), a subscription package that offers a paid verification seal. This release comes as a direct response to Twitter monetization.

The subscription package, which can be purchased for 55 BRL per month within the app, on both iOS and Android devices, gives access to a number of benefits, such as account verification with proactive protection and English-language support. This move comes after successful initial tests in countries including Australia, New Zealand, the US, UK, Canada and India.

Meta verified vs blue twitter

Both Meta Verified and Twitter Blue have in common that they offer exclusive features to their subscribers. In the case of the Facebook and Instagram package, users have the use of different stickers in Stories and Reels and the ability to support other content creators.

However, an important distinction between the two services is that it is not possible to buy a single subscription for both Instagram and Facebook; each platform must be checked separately. However, accounts that already have the verified badge can also participate in Meta Verified to access the program’s features, without impacting existing free badges.

To join Meta Verified, users need to go to “Account Center” in Instagram or Facebook app settings, select “Meta Verified”, set up payment and take a selfie with their ID. The company may request an additional video selfie to confirm authenticity.

Criticism of the initiative

Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to charge for the verification stamp is a strategy to try to generate additional profits for sas companies, by exploiting the existing demand and the search for authenticity in social networks.

Despite the features offered, the subscription service has received criticism on social networks. As with Twitter Blue, users in other countries have objected to being charged for the verification badge. The need for separate signatures for Instagram and Facebook has also been the subject of complaints. Additionally, the indictment has already raised discussions about democratizing access to verification.
