Doctor Thales Bretas, widower of the actor Paulo Gustavo, revealed the details of the difficult conversations he has with his sons, Romeu and Gael, who at three years old are already asking about their father, deceased in 2021, victim of covid-19. In an interview, Bretas says that, after the comedian’s tragic death, he tried to explain to his children what happened.

To the Talk to Bial, the doctor said that, at first, it was difficult to bring up the subject with the children. “I wanted to keep their memory of the moments with Paulo fresh. At the beginning I understood that for them it was a challenge, they parted ways, they changed the subject, they didn’t understand the reason for this father’s absence”.

But, as the years went by and the children matured, Bretas says, the little ones’ curiosity about the subject increased. “One day Romeo asked me: ‘But why did papa Paulo go to heaven?’

“‘But I didn’t want Papa Paulo to go to heaven,’ and, at the time, I even swallowed my tears and said, ‘Neither did I want to, son, absolutely not, and we never want anyone to go to heaven. and we never pick this time,'” said Thales.

Difficulties as a single parent

In an emotional interview with GNT, the dermatologist revealed the importance of having a support network during this challenging process as a “solo father” and highlighted Paulo’s closeness to family as an essential factor in overcoming the challenges of fatherhood.

“This project of having a child has never been something that I imagined on my own, I’ve always wanted to have a family,” Thales vented. “The moment I lost, I went through a difficult moment, because, at the same time I needed to find myself again, process the pain, I had the reflection of being almost two figures for my children,” he added.

“We have a rotation scheme in this support, every day a grandmother picks up from school. On the days I’m in the office, because sometimes it’s a time when I can’t answer,” explained the doctor.
