After the death of former volleyball player Walewska Oliveira, her parents began a legal battle with her widower, Ricardo Alexandre Mendes. The family accuses Mendes, appointed executor of Walewska’s estate, of having contributed to her death, and claims that he is “unworthy” of the legacy left by the former athlete. The information comes from News on TVwho had access to the documents relating to the opening and processing of the inventory.

Under the law, the surviving spouse has preference in managing the inventory, a prerogative granted to Mendes by the Court. However, Walewska’s parents, who also have their share of inheritance, contested the designation.

Second News on TV, the family claims that the tragedy is still being investigated as a “suspicious death”, after Walewska fell from the 17th floor of the building where she lived in Jardins, São Paulo. The authorities are trying to clarify the circumstances of the accident.

A crucial element in the dispute is the farewell letter left by Walewska, in which the athlete expressed dissatisfaction with Mendes’ attitude. Close friends and family say that the athlete’s dream was her motherhood, but the decision not to have her children was forced on her by her widower. After the discovery of the betrayal and a child out of wedlock, the player would have been devastated.

Mendes’ absence from the wake and burial costs is cited by the family as a reason for conflict. The widower claims he was not present at the request of his in-laws to avoid confusion with Walewska’s brother, Wesley Oliveira, but the family denies this request.

The family’s defense claims that Ricardo Mendes, Walewska’s partner for two decades, did not recognize the body, neglected to assist the family during the wake and burial, but was quick to request the opening of the inventory and the his authorization as an inventor.

Lawyers gained access to the letters before Walewska’s death, arguing that their contents will make Mendes unworthy in the current trial.

Mendes, in turn, defends himself against the accusations, claiming his right to be executor and heir. By presenting Walewska’s life insurance certificate, in which she names him and his mother as beneficiaries, she seeks to consolidate his position.

According to the report, in the police report the widower stated that relations were deteriorating, citing among the problems “the obligation to make purchases” on the part of his wife, which would have “wasted a considerable part of the built up wealth”. The family, however, claims ignorance of Walewska’s alleged financial problems in this regard.

OR Earth tries to locate Ricardo Mendes’ defense, the space remains open for demonstrations.
