Shannen Doherty’s death ends a career of ups and downs marked by the actress’s difficult personality

Sunday was the day of Silvio Santos, Gugu and Faustão, but also of ‘Barrados no Baile’. The program was a huge success in Globo’s programming. It inspired the creation of youth attractions such as “Malhação”.

The main character, Brenda, represented teenagers seeking acceptance by the group, popularity at school, taste in fashion, first love and sexual discovery. She became the icon of a generation. Many Brazilian children are named after the character.

Appearing in 4 of the original 10 seasons, the role turned the unknown Shannen Doherty into a TV star. Fame went to her head. After subsequent problems during the recording and behind the scenes, she was removed from the cast.

Never again a program with such repercussion. The closest thing was with the series “Charmed”. In 2008 he agreed to participate in some episodes of the new version of ‘Barrados no Baile’, without the same impact on the public.

In recent years, comments have appeared in the media about her battle with breast cancer, discovered in 2015, which had metastasized to her brain and bones. She lamented the loneliness brought by the disease and the difficulty of finding a man willing to date a woman “with an expiration date.”

In an interview with ‘People’ late last year, she gave a touching rant. “I don’t want to die… I’m not done living. I’m not done loving. I’m not done creating things. I’m not done changing things for the better.”

His death on July 13, at the age of 53, was the final chapter in a long period of suffering and self-pity. He lived far from Hollywood and the glamour of the old days. Knowing that the end was near, he sold most of his assets to pay for his treatment and to make donations to his mother and only brother.

Before Shannen Doherty, another ‘Barred at the Ball’ actor died prematurely. Heartthrob Luke Perry, who played Dylon, died of complications from a stroke in March 2019. He was 52.
