‘She is Goka Maciel’: Content creator who succeeds with literature and good humor on the web

Those who see Goka Maciel reciting poems and performing Brazilian folk songs on the Internet may not imagine it. Gloria Caroline Maciel Costa has a background that is not very tied to this artistic vein. Goka has a degree in geology.

The art comes from his postgraduate degree in Performing Arts at the Centro de Artes Laranajeiras (CAL). The good humor that guides the content published on social media is natural for the 28-year-old from Bahia, who has gained more than 143 thousand followers on Instagram and more than 65 thousand people on TikTok.

Born in Irecê, Goka moved to Salvador at the age of 15 to complete high school. He stayed in the capital until he finished college. Although he has been acting since the age of 10, his choice of major was quite rational.

“It wasn’t a very exact course, it wasn’t completely humanistic, and in high school I really liked everything about it. I ended up studying geology and while I was in college, I took my courses. [de teatro] outside. I got my DRT for them,” he says in an interview with Earth.

During college, the influencer had geology fieldwork and theater performances in her routine.

“It was when I was ‘in the field,’ I had to run in and do a show. Or do a test and go out for a show,” he recalls.

In her last two years of college, however, Goka decided to dedicate herself fully to geology. She lived for a year in Goiás, where she worked at a Canadian mining company. Goka says she has no intention of working in the field again, but she acknowledges that thanks to what she learned in geology, she is now able to have business knowledge that helps her in her work as an actress and content creator.

“My plan was always to graduate and then live my life as an actress. After I graduated during the pandemic, a job ended there and I stayed another year as a geologist in Catité, in the south of Bahia,” she adds.

From geologist to actress and content creator

In September 2021, however, Goka’s life took a turn: she ended a relationship, quit her job, and returned to Salvador. There, she already knew she no longer wanted to work in geology. It was then that she began postgraduate studies in performing arts and accepted the need to move to the southeast.

About eight months later, in May 2022, she decided to live in São Paulo to invest once and for all in her acting career. Despite still having a more “formal” job, she had two Instagram profiles: one that she rarely updated, but which she defines as “poetic”, and another called “Leona vengeful do sertão”, where she created different moodboards and shared only with friends.

After starting out creating funny content for her public profile, she went viral and remains active as a content creator today. Her video about dating, posted in 2023, for example, has had more than 591,000 views on TikTok.

Literary references and musical influence

In addition to theater and cinema, the influencer is also passionate about literature.

“My new obsession is Latin American literature. Isabel Allende, Socorro Acioli…”, he reveals.

It is not surprising that her videos on social media are full of references not only to literature, but also to music, especially MPB. In Goka’s social media, in fact, the feelings are multiple: you laugh, you cry, you reflect, you interact and you learn from her.

“I like Brazilian music, I don’t listen to international music much. There’s the issue of brega, forró, which is very strong in the interior. When I moved to Salvador, what took hold here was pagodão baiano, at the same time My parents always listened to part of MPB. I’m very romantic, everything always comes from the same source”, he says.

And what does she like to listen to in her moments of relaxation? Well, currently Goka says she has listened to songs by Djavan, Marina Lima and Caetano Veloso.

“I don’t want to be under the pressure of having to produce. I let my mind rest. You avoid fetishizing it, but you get comments from people who liked it and others who didn’t quite get it,” he explains.

Goka is currently resting in Bahia, while planning a return to her usual routine in São Paulo. In the capital São Paulo, her first monologue was presented in April. She also participates in the flag-shaped visual arts collective, @coletivazona.
