Cinematic success could prevent Fernanda Torres from being Odete Roitman in Globo

Projections for the actress’s award for her performance in “I’m Still Here” indicate a full schedule abroad in the coming months

The 10 minutes of applause at the end of the screening of ‘I’m Still Here’ at the Venice Film Festival once again put the spotlight on Fernanda Torres, who won Best Actress at the 1986 Cannes Film Festival for ‘Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar’.

Her portrayal of Eunice, the widow of former deputy Rubens Paiva, who was tortured and killed during the dictatorship, earned praise from influential outlets such as “The Hollywood Reporter”, “Variety”, “Screen Daily”, “Deadline” and “The Guardian”.

Alongside the unanimously positive reviews, there have also been bets on a possible nomination for the 2025 Oscar. Some articles recalled that her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who plays an elderly Eunice suffering from Alzheimer’s, was among those nominated for the golden statuette in 1999, for her performance as the ‘letter writer’ Dora in ‘Central do Brasil’, directed by Walter Salles, the same director of ‘Still I’m Here’.

The success of the new film on the international market should occupy Torres in the coming months, requiring his presence at more festivals and on a publicity tour. Prioritizing cinema could make his participation in ‘Vale Tudo’ unfeasible.

The 58-year-old actress is at the top of the list of candidates to play villain Odete Roitman in the remake, which is due to debut at 9 p.m. in March next year as part of Globo’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

According to sources at the editorial, negotiations with Fernanda Torres have lost momentum in recent weeks. Other names have been floated for the role. She hasn’t shot a full-length telenovela on the Internet since she starred in the remake of “Selva de Pedra,” in 1986.

Fifteen years later, she appeared in 1 episode of the 19:00 production ‘As Filhas da Mãe’, experiencing the young phase of Lulu de Luxemburgo, the character of her mother, Fernanda Montenegro.

The updated version of ‘Vale Tudo’ was written by Manuela Dias, of ‘Amor de Mãe’. It became Globo’s big gamble to regain prestige in prime time after a series of disappointments on Ibope, such as “Um Lugar ao Sol”, “Travessia” and the current “Renascer”.
