Find out why Maguila decided to donate his brain after his death

Maguila had been battling pugilistic dementia for years

This Thursday, the 24th, the former boxer died Maguilaat 66 years old. The former athlete was hospitalized battling dementia pugilistica, a disease also known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

After the news of his death, an old report was released, revealing that the star had donated his brain for studies. In 2018, an article on the Globo Esporte website reported that Maguila and his family had agreed to make the donation to the University of São Paulo (USP).

The aim is to deepen scientific studies on dementia pugilistica, in which he was diagnosed, 11 years ago, with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), also known as “boxer syndrome”.

The condition is associated with repeated head trauma, such as career blows, which can cause damage to memory, cognition and behavior. In September this year a nodule was discovered in Maguila’s lung. He was in a nursing home.
