Netflix will begin billing subscribers who use their account at an address other than the one provided in the company’s registration. The charge has begun to be applied in five Latin American countries in the testing phase.

Brazil has not made it to the list for now, but Brazilian consumers have already started receiving Netflix alert notifications when they use their account on new devices.

In principle, an additional fee will be charged if it is verified that the service login and password have been used for more than two weeks at alternate addresses. The company ensures that the use of Netflix by people on vacation will not be affected. Therefore, the charge will not be made if the device used by the subscriber is mobile, such as smartphone, tablet and laptop.

The countries where the complaint begins are Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. The amount ranges from $ 1.70 to $ 2.99, depending on the country.

The password sharing charge reflects a downward trend in the number of subscribers to the service. In the first quarter of the year, Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers worldwide and expects an even more significant decline in the current quarter – the company expected over 1 million fewer. The official numbers will be known this Tuesday (19/7).

At the same time, Netflix estimates that more than 100 million households use accounts paid for by others, and that this practice is a major cause of subscriber loss. Charging the extra fee for sharing would be a way to reverse the financial loss of declining subscriptions.

The company’s shares have already fallen 65% this year due to investor fears about the future of streaming.
