The early hours of December 16 were marked by tragedy in Trinidad and Tobago. Lisa Morris-JulianMinister of Education and influential political figure, died in a fire together with two children. The case shocked the country and raised several questions.

What happened in the fire?

According to local authorities, the fire consumed the family’s residence in the city of Arima, the main city in the eastern part of Trinidad and Tobago. Lisa Morris-Julian and two of her children, ages 25 and 6, were unable to escape the flames.

The minister’s husband and two other family members present in the house were injured and taken to hospital. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Who was Lisa Morris-Julian?

Lisa Morris-Julian, politics for National Popular Movement (PNM), marked his career with dedication to public service.

She was mayor of Arima between 2013 and 2020 and then elected MP in 2020, representing the D’Abadie/O’Meara region.

She has since held the position of minister in the Ministry of Education, being known for her active stance and advocacy for education in the country.

Prime Minister Keith Rowley and other government authorities were present at the site of the fire, bringing solidarity. In an official statement, the government expressed regret:

“The Government of Trinidad and Tobago expresses its deepest condolences to the family, loved ones and constituents at this time and we keep them in our collective thoughts and prayers.”

A trajectory marked by education and politics

The eldest of seven children, Lisa has always been close to public life. His family, with a strong political tradition, included grandparents and uncles involved as mayors and city councilors.

Before her political career, Lisa was a literature and theater teacher, dedicating herself to the education of young people. She has distinguished herself as an amateur playwright and has been awarded at school festivals, as well as contributing as an examiner for the Caribbean Examinations Council.
