Farewell Black’s ceremony was held on Friday (25 July) at the Municipal Theater in the center of Rio de Janeiro. The place, chosen by the artist herself before dying, was open to the public from 9:00 to 13:00 (Brasilia time) and then remained reserved for family and close friends. Preta Gil died on Sunday (20 July) at the age of 50 in New York, after a long treatment against intestinal cancer, diagnosed in 2023.
The trail was marked by moments of strong emotion, musical honors and symbolic presence. The singer’s body was transported by a car by the firefighters of the procession on the streets of the center of Rio to the cemetery of penance, passing through the road carnival circuit that bears its name, alluding to the traditional black block. The path was accompanied by applause and demonstrations of affection of fans, friends and family.
The choice of white as a predominant garment attracted attention. The color was adopted for the faith of Preta Gil, practicing Candomblé. White represents Oxalá, Orixá linked to peace and spirituality. The tribute to the artist’s spirituality was also present in the selection of songs. A playlist with 100 tracks, organized by itself, has packed the wake of songs by artists such as Gilberto Gil, Ivete Sangalo, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Francisco Gil and Tiaguinho.
Several artists participated in the day. Among the first to arrive there were Taís Araújo, Luiz Miranda and Tiago Abravanel. Names such as Claudia Abreu, Alice Wegmann, Malu Mader, Ingrid Guimarães, Sabrina Sato, Nicolas Prattes, Maria Gadú, Carol Peixinho, Carla Perez, Xander, Pericles, Marcelo Serrado, Caio Blat and Ludmilla. Some, like Tiaguinho, were publicly electrified.
“Thank God, I managed to say everything I tried for her in life. Black is a dear and leaves a legacy. I will always sing her songs. They are eternal,” said Thiaguinho, visibly shaken.
The climate was particularly moving when family members greeted each other. Francisco Gil, son of the singer, appeared next to his girlfriend, Alane Dias, and spoke with regret: “He is very sad. We didn’t want this to happen, we had two years of struggle … my mother rested.”
Gilberto Gil, Preta’s father, arrived at the end of the ceremony and starred in one of the most exciting scenes kissing his daughter’s forehead. The artist’s mother, Sandra Gadelha, and her sister, Bela Gil were also present. The cremation was held on the same day, ending the farewell with the presence of friends and family.
“He leaves a legacy, a message from a human person, with important defenses for society,” said the Minister of Culture Margareth Menezes, who accompanied the First Lady da Silva during the ceremony.
