The Make It Right Foundation, an NGO founded by Brad Pitt in 2007, was ordered by the US judicial system to pay millions in compensation to 109 victims of Hurricane Katrina. At the time of the natural disaster, which destroyed the city of New Orleans, the organization made great publicity for the construction of environmentally sustainable low-cost homes for the homeless.
However, victims have since complained of structural defects, leaks, termites and molds in buildings, among other problems.
The first problems with the houses began to manifest themselves in 2013, but were brought to justice by the residents only in 2018, when they filed a collective action against the organization.
The judicial settlement, announced last Tuesday (8/9), provides for the payment of 25,000 US dollars to each of the residents, for a total of approximately 20.5 million US dollars (more than R $ 100 million in national currency) .
The group’s legal representative stated that all the money raised from the compensation will be used to maintain the residences.
Brad Pitt and representatives of his NGO did not comment on the deal.
