This Tuesday 30th, Brazilian films shortlisted to compete for the 2023 Oscars were announced

the six Brazilian films preselected to compete for the Oscar 2023 were announced on the morning of this Tuesday, 30, from Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts. The productions are competing for a place in the “Best International Film” category at the 95th annual awards.

THE MOTHER, by Cristiano Burlan
Synopsis: The MOTHER follows the journey of Maria, a north-eastern migrant and street vendor in search of her son Valdo, presumably murdered by the military police during an action in the village where he lives. Seeking to find out where her son is, Maria faces various adversities. She has no news to help her find him. This tragedy leaves a deep wound in Mary’s personality, which she begins to experience under the sign of her insecurity and impunity.

PETER’S JOURNEY, by Laís Bodanzky
Synopsis: 1831, while crossing the Atlantic on an English frigate bound for Europe, Pedro, the former emperor of Brazil, seeks the physical and emotional strength to face his brother who has usurped his kingdom in Portugal. Pedro finds himself sick and insecure. He enters the ship in search of a place and a homeland. Looking for yourself.

CARVO, by Carolina Markowicz
Synopsis: In a small country town, a family receives a profitable but also dangerous proposal: to host a stranger in their home. Before it even arrives, however, arrangements will need to be made and family life will begin to transform. However, none of the family members, much less the guest himself, sees their expectations met. “Carvão” is an acid portrait of a Brazil where the naturalization of the absurd reigns.

MARS ONE, by Gabriel Martins
Synopsis: The Martins, a black lower-middle-class family, live between their daily commitments and their desires and expectations, despite the tension of a conservative government that has just taken over the country. In the midst of this daily life, Tércia takes care of the house as she goes through a crisis of anguish, Wellington wants to see her son become a professional football player, Eunice has a new love and little Deivinho dreams of colonizing Mars.

PEACE, by Paxton Winters
Synopsis: Tati is an introspective 13-year-old struggling to connect with her estranged father, Jaca, who has just been released from prison during the turbulent time of the Rio Olympics. As the “peaceful” police struggle to occupy the favelas around Rio, Tati and Jaca must overcome obstacles that threaten their hopes for the future. Born from a seven-year creative collaboration between the “Morro dos Prazeres” community, writer / director Paxton Winters, Wellington Magalhães (Maga) and Joseph Carter (Joe), PACIFICADO offers an intimate portrait of a family trying to find peace in the fickle battlefield they call home.

PALOMA, by Marcelo Gomes
Synopsis: Paloma, a peasant woman, wants a traditional wedding in a church with her fiancé Zé. The local priest refuses her request. But Paloma, a trans woman, will fight for her dream.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that 28 Brazilian films have been registered and qualified to compete for the vacancy. For the first time, in fact, the elections will be held in two rounds. On Monday 5 September, the film representing Brazil in the contest for a place at the Oscars will be chosen from among the six finalists.
