What is Sapiosexuality?

As explained by Bela Gil, sapiosexuality refers to people who feel sexual or romantic attraction to someone based on their education or intelligence.

In this sense, good conversation and knowledge exchange act as the main, if not the only, agent responsible for the relationship creation of the sapiosexual individual.

The term derives from the Latin (“sapio” means “wise”) and would have been used for the first time by the engineer Darren Stalder on the social network livejournal in the early 2000s.

The word, however, only became popular in the 2010s when it reached relationship apps. According to the magazine Cosmopolitanthe application Okay Cupid made sapiosexuality an option among the sexual orientations to profile in 2014.

Back in 2017, an application called toad has been released, promising to be “the only app that gets to the bottom of people through their lived experiences, honest opinions, and unabashed passions.”
