After many threats, the now silent Jair Bolsonaro renewed the operating concession of the Globo network for another 15 years. During his rule, Bolsonaro treated Globo as a sworn enemy and suggested the station would have “difficulty” staying on the air.
“We will not prosecute anyone, we will only enforce the legislation for these concession renewals. We have information that they will have difficulty,” Bolsonaro said in one of the many times he mentioned the expiration of the Rio radio station’s concession.
Bolsonaro’s hatred first appeared in October 2019, in a live broadcast shortly after a report in the “Jornal Nacional” linked his name to the investigation into the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco. Amidst various offences, he addressed the network in his best truncated style: “We have a conversation in 2022. I must be dead by then. Because the process of renewing the concession will not be prosecuted. radio. But the process has to be streamlined, it has to be cool. It’s not going to be good for you or anyone.”
He returned to the subject several times during his tenure, always forgetting that, not going after anyone, he would occasionally have to mention other channels.
SBT, for example, had the renewal of the concession signed on 12 December, a symbolic date, given that it is Silvio Santos’ birthday. Record and Band also renewed their licenses for the same 15-year period.
The decision is expected to be published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday (21/12).
According to rumors, Bolsonaro would have decided to sign the renewal, 11 days before the end of his mandate, in order not to give Lula the pleasure of signing the renewal of Globo.
