Sir David Beckham holds far more power in his marriage to Victoria than public perception suggests, according to biographer Alison Boshoff on a new podcast.
Speaking on the Daily Mail podcast Tales from the Celebrity Trenches, host Jamie East interviewed Boshoff about her new book, Brand Beckham: The Fame. The Feuds. The Fallout, which examines the family's most turbulent years.
The book charts how Sir David and Victoria built their global empire across nearly three decades, tracing their story up to the estrangement of their eldest son, Brooklyn Beckham, following his marriage to American actress Nicola Peltz.

Boshoff, an Editor-at-Large for the Daily Mail, interviewed more than 20 Beckham insiders for the biography, building on her years of experience covering the high-profile family for the newspaper.
Marriage power dynamic
Boshoff revealed that researching the book completely altered her understanding of who holds the power within the Beckham marriage. While the public often assumes Victoria directs their decisions, Boshoff found the opposite to be true.
"Everyone thinks David's wonderful," Boshoff told East during the podcast episode. "They think, poor David, carted around from pillar to post by Victoria. She wears the trousers. Actually, that was not the picture at all that emerged after writing the book. Researching the book, it's entirely the other way round. That was really fascinating to me."

Sir David, the former England football captain and Manchester United star, married Victoria in 1999 after she achieved international fame as Posh Spice in the 1990s pop group Spice Girls. Together, the couple established a global brand spanning fashion, sports, and entertainment.
Spice Girls culture and family friction
The author explained that her second major revelation involved Victoria's history in the Spice Girls and how it shaped her interpersonal relationships, including her dynamic with daughter-in-law Nicola Peltz.
"There were two things I didn't really understand until I wrote the book," Boshoff said. "I wrote about Victoria when she was in the Spice Girls, but it was only when I was speaking to somebody. They talked to me about how they had this classic girl band relationship."

Boshoff explained that dynamics within the pop group were marked by intense rivalry over attention and style. "It was like, who's got the best solo, who has the nicest outfits, and there was all this endless jealousy," she said.
An insider informed Boshoff that Victoria had become "well schooled in the art of being a b****" during her time with the group. Boshoff noted that this perspective helped explain the subtle friction between Victoria and Peltz, an American actress known for her roles in Bates Motel and Transformers: Age of Extinction.
"Then, when I started looking at her relationship with Nicola Peltz, it started to kind of clang in my head," Boshoff told East. "I thought, ok, now I understand this. There was all this passive aggressive nonsense about not liking things on Instagram, withholding favour. But subtly, in a way you could deny it... that I really do understand now."

Wedding fallout and book release
Much of the public scrutiny surrounding the family rift escalated following a sensational Instagram statement posted by Brooklyn Beckham in January. Media coverage at the time focused heavily on Victoria, whose conduct around the wedding dominated his account.
Sir David and Victoria Beckham have not commented on the claims in the book.
Brand Beckham: The Fame. The Feuds. The Fallout by Alison Boshoff is published by Century at £22 and is available now. The podcast Tales from the Celebrity Trenches is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other major streaming platforms.
