Greek singer Dimitris Kokotas has died at the age of 57 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, following a medical battle that lasted more than two years. He passed away at the G. Gennimatas hospital in Athens, where he had remained hospitalized since suffering a severe cardiac event during television rehearsals in March 2024.
Kokotas, the son of the legendary Greek laiko singer Stamatis Kokotas, collapsed on March 28, 2024, after suffering an acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest. The emergency occurred during rehearsals for the popular musical reality competition show Just the 2 of Us, commonly known as J2US. He was rushed to G. Gennimatas, a major public general hospital in the Greek capital, where he remained under intensive care until his death.
Final Television Appearance
Just two days before his collapse, on March 26, 2024, Kokotas made what proved to be his final television appearance. He appeared as a studio guest on the morning show Proino Sou Sou, broadcast on the OPEN television network, alongside his show partner, actress and singer Traiana Anania.
Speaking to show host Eleni Tsolaki, Kokotas reflected on his return to public performance and expressed strong optimism about entering a new stage in his artistic career. He explained that he felt as though he was starting over from the beginning.
He noted that he was fortunate to perform a catalogue of popular hit songs written for him by top Greek composers, including Phoebus, Nikos Karvelas, Giorgos Theofanous, and Dimitris Miliotakis. Kokotas said those celebrated tracks continued to support his career significantly, even as he felt the fresh excitement of launching a new artistic era.
Absence From Television
During the interview, Kokotas also addressed his long absence from television broadcasts prior to joining the musical show. He explained that he had deliberately chosen not to appear on television unless he had a meaningful new project or artistic work to present to the public.
He admitted, however, that upon reflecting on that stance, he believed the decision had been a mistake. Kokotas noted that he should have maintained a more regular presence on television screens over the years rather than stepping back entirely.
Two-Year Hospital Battle
Only hours after recording the broadcast, Kokotas suffered the severe heart attack and cardiac arrest during rehearsal that abruptly altered his life. Emergency medical crews transported him directly from the stage to G. Gennimatas hospital, marking the start of a continuous stay that lasted more than 28 months.
Throughout his prolonged hospitalization, family members, friends, and colleagues across the Greek music and entertainment industry maintained hope for a positive medical development. Kokotas was ultimately unable to recover from the severe cardiac event.
His death at age 57 has brought widespread mourning to his family, collaborators, and the wider Greek music community. His final television appearance now carries added emotional resonance for fans, having been recorded just two days before the collapse that changed his life forever.
