Disney+ has launched a curated Marvel collection of 15 titles before Avengers Doomsday and is studying a free ad-supported subscription tier.

Disney+ Launches Avengers Doomsday Hub and Free Tier Plan

Disney+ has released a special Marvel Studios collection featuring 14 films and one series to prepare fans for Avengers: Doomsday. The curated watch list is now available on the streaming platform in Spain ahead of the movie's theatrical premiere on December 18.

With 85 days remaining until the film reaches Spanish cinemas, the collection gives viewers fewer than 100 days to watch the essential backstory. The release comes seven years after the character Iron Man sacrificed his life in Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Actor Robert Downey Jr., who previously played Iron Man, returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming film as the villain Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. Marvel Studios is the American film production company behind the interconnected superhero franchise, which has generated billions of dollars in global box office revenue.

The official synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday states that legendary heroes from three different universes are drawn into an inevitable confrontation and must face an unprecedented existential threat that will test everything they know.

Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo return to direct the new installment. The Russo brothers are among the favorite filmmakers of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, having previously directed major blockbusters for the studio including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

The Doomsday Watch List

The Disney+ collection organizes the 15 titles in a specific sequence on the platform. The list opens with early 2000s releases from 20th Century Fox before transitioning into core Marvel Cinematic Universe titles.

The full lineup on the platform includes X-Men from 2000, X-Men 2 from 2003, Captain America: The First Avenger from 2011, The Avengers from 2012, and Avengers: Infinity War from 2018.

Also included are Avengers: Endgame from 2019, both seasons of the television series Loki spanning 2021 to 2023, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings from 2021, Spider-Man: No Way Home from 2021, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever from 2022.

The final entries in the special hub feature Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from 2022, Deadpool & Wolverine from 2024, Captain America: Brave New World from 2025, Thunderbolts* subtitled The New Avengers from 2025, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps from 2025.

Disney Explores Ad-Supported Free Tier

Beyond the Marvel collection, Disney executive leadership confirmed that Disney+ is evaluating a potential free membership tier. Josh D’Amaro, chief executive officer of Disney, acknowledged that the company is studying the implementation of a free account to attract new subscribers and expand platform reach.

Disney+ operates as the flagship subscription video-on-demand service of The Walt Disney Company, an American entertainment conglomerate. Launched in late 2019, the service holds an extensive digital library featuring content from Marvel, Star Wars, FOX, Disney, and Pixar, providing a significant competitive advantage in the global streaming industry.

Disney has not established a firm launch date or a finalized structure for the potential free account. Company leadership is currently weighing various models to grant users unpaid access to selected portions of its media catalogue without requiring a paid monthly subscription.

One leading strategy under evaluation is the integration of Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television, known as FAST channels, directly within the Disney+ interface. This business model, already utilized by rival platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, delivers continuous media streams supported by commercial advertising.

Under this proposed framework, users would be able to view a restricted selection of feature films, television shows, premiere episodes, or content on a periodic rotation. The approach mirrors a free access model recently introduced by Spanish telecommunications operator Movistar Plus in Spain.

Disney executive strategy aims for the free access portal to serve as an initial entry point for non-paying viewers. Company officials anticipate that introducing audiences to portioned catalogue offerings will encourage consumers to upgrade to full paid subscriptions over time.

Disney Partnerships and Social Media Expansion

In tandem with streaming service adjustments, Disney has established a strategic alliance with the social media platform TikTok. The partnership will enable social media users to create short video content incorporating official Disney intellectual property.

The agreement allows creators to utilize characters and assets from Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and other major Disney entertainment franchises in their videos. TikTok is a short-form video hosting service owned by the technology company ByteDance.

The collaboration will launch initially as a pilot project in the United States. Disney officials indicated that if the pilot program proves successful, the social media feature will subsequently expand to additional international markets.
