For Fernanda Montenegro it would be a deserved historical consecration. But for Gwyneth Paltrow the Oscar she took from the Brazilian in 1999 is just a weight on a door in her garden.
Gwyneth Paltrow negatively surprised critics by winning the Oscar for best actress in 1999 for “Shakespeare in Love”, surpassing Fernanda’s masterful performance in “Central do Brasil” and even Cate Blanchett for “Elizabeth” and Maryl Streep for “Um Amor Verdadeiro”. Now, she revealed that her figurine was left on the ground in her backyard, and is acting as a weight for the door.
In an appearance on Vogue’s “73 Questions” series, the actress showed off the award in her backyard and said, “It’s my front door.” She added that it “works perfectly.”
Oscar makes her uncomfortable
It is not the first time that the actress has commented on the lack of affection for the statuette. In 2005, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she mentioned that she kept the Oscar “hidden at the bottom of the shelf in my room.” The actress associated the trophy with ambiguous feelings, indicating that the award made her feel uncomfortable.
Her choice as winner was the most criticized in the Best Actress category of all the Oscars.
