Last Saturday, December 2, María Fernanda Martínez went with her 5-year-old child to Melaque Beach, located in Cihuatlán, a municipality in the state of Jalisco, according to N+ reports.
According to witnesses, around 11 a.m. both were swimming in an inflatable water park, located about 20 meters from the shore.
Reportedly, upon noticing the presence of a shark, ‘Mari Fer’, as she is fondly called, rushed to take her child for a ride, but was unable to reach safety.
Cihuatlán Civil Protection and Firefighters reported, via Facebook, that emergency services went to the scene as soon as possible, as they were alerted to “a person with problems getting out” of the water.
The head of the agency, Rafael Araiza, explained to the Associated Press that the shark bit and tore the leg of Martínez, who suffered massive bleeding, which caused his death.
His body was recovered and brought ashore, which was filmed by bystanders. The video from that moment is circulating on social networks.
In a statement on December 4, the Jalisco government said that “this extraordinary event was the product of a combination of biological and environmental factors, such as cloud cover.

At the same funeral, Ángel Martínez Arreguín, from Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán, expressed what he knows about how his daughter María Fernanda Martínez died.
“The same fishermen commented that in the morning something had happened with a fisherman, an approach, and that sharks were not usually seen nearby,” he said in an interview with Grupo Multimedios.
“And at noon Marie Fer was there, enjoying the beach with her baby, and it was her turn,” he added, visibly overwhelmed.
For their part, the family members acknowledged that they are very sorry, as “she loved being at sea”, where “she had already developed her whole life” and even fought for “the defense of animals”.
