Camilla of Cornwall speaks candidly about her relationship with Prince Charles and her grandchildren

The Duchess Camilla of Cornwall became the heroine of the July issue of British Vogue – for the first time in 17 years in the status of the wife of Prince Charles. In a candid interview given by the future queen consort on the eve of her jubilee – she will turn 75 on July 17 – the duchess spoke about her attitude to age, family happiness, grandchildren and the upcoming holiday. Here are the most interesting quotes.

About age.

Really, who wants to be 75 but there’s nothing we can do about it… such is life… I let the years come and go. I mean, I would be very happy to turn back time. When you get to any big number, whether it’s 30, 50, 70, you think, “God, I’m so old.” But, you know, my mother died when she was 72, so I already outlived her, which is kind of weird.

About time alone with Prince Charles.

It’s not easy. Sometimes it’s like ships passing by at night, but we always try to meet each other for a cup of tea and talk about our day. It’s nice to catch up when we have a little time to do it. You know, when we’re apart, we like to read our books in different corners of the same room, it’s very relaxing because you don’t have to talk, you just sit and enjoy this time together.

About the close attention to her by the press after the death of Princess Diana.

I had been singled out for so long that the only thing left for me then was to find a way to live with it. Nobody likes to be looked at all the time and, you know, criticized… But I think I’m pretty good at it in the end.

About her role as a grandmother.

The good thing about being a grandma is that you can pamper them sometimes, give them more things that their parents don’t want them to have. One of my granddaughters goes to school very close to where I live, so when I’m in Wiltshire and her parents aren’t home, I can drop by and pick her up and take her home.

Recall that Camilla and Prince Charles first met at a polo match in 1970, and, as they say, a connection was immediately established between them. In 1992, their romance became public. The situation was complicated by the fact that both were married: Charles was married to Princess Diana, and Camilla was married to Andrew Parker-Bowles. Camilla and Andrew divorced in 1995. In 1996, Charles also put an end to his marriage to Diana, who died a year later. The prince had to wait for time to introduce his sons to a new lover after such a tragedy – this happened in 1998. And in 2000, Camila was introduced to Elizabeth II. The couple tied the knot in 2005. From her first marriage, Camila, like Charles, has two children – son Tom and daughter Lola, and five grandchildren aged 12 to 14.
