Olga Bongiovanni tells the details of her meetings with Silvio Santos: “The greatest of all”

Presenter with half a century of career highlights the lessons learned by the owner of SBT, away from studies from 2022

Anyone, famous or anonymous, is struck when they see themselves in front of Silvio Santos. The most popular presenter on Brazilian TV is a living legend. Olga Bongiovanni had the privilege of interviewing him and, years later, of having a professional conversation.

On April 7, Journalist’s Day, the presenter created a commemorative post using a photo taken with the communicator 36 years ago. OR TV room I wanted to know the context of the image and your opinion on SBT’s owner and biggest star.

Why did you choose an album with Silvio Santos to celebrate your profession?

I have great respect and affection for him, like most Brazilians, for his career and his teachings. That moment meant a lot in my career for several reasons. I remember the years on this journey, everyone who influenced me, reached out to me, encouraged me. Silvio Santos is the greatest of all time. He taught us that to make ourselves understood it is necessary to repeat the same phrase, the same word many times. He seems silly, but he isn’t. Today, with social media, it’s incredible how many times I have to repeat the same thing (laughs). Everything remains the same.

Which broadcaster did you work for? How did the meeting go?

In 1988 I presented news on Rede OM and did a program on Rádio Cidade de Cascavel, in Paraná. Through the radio we signed up to participate in Cidade x Cidade, presented by Gugu. We moved the entire population, it was crazy. We filled four buses and faced a 14-hour journey to Sao Paulo. We arrived at the theater early Sunday morning to record. I coordinated the kids. I left the audience to look for Silvio. I stood across the street with my eyes fixed on that narrow door through which he would emerge. After much thirst, heat, tiredness, the door opened and he appeared.

What did you feel when you saw it for the first time?

My heart wanted to jump out of my mouth. The security guards didn’t want to let me get close. When he approached the car I shouted ‘Silvio, please, Cascavel, talk to me’. He looked at me, opened his arms, told the guards to let me pass and said, “Let’s go, Cascavel.” I almost died.

Was he kind?

Very kind and affectionate. He asked about the city and how our trip had been. The security guards told me not to talk about politics, but I didn’t fail to ask if he would run for President of the Republic the following year. Silvio disagrees and says that it is better to stay at SBT, because he has no talent for politics.

(Silvio ended up running, appearing in 1st place in voter intention polls, but his candidacy was contested. The election ended up being won by Fernando Collor after competing in the 2nd round with Lula.)

What other memories do you have of that meeting?

A great lesson from Silvio: don’t forget to listen to your fan. It is thanks to this admirer that you became famous. Paying attention costs so little. I feel sorry for the artists who, after becoming famous, forgot where they came from. Silvio doesn’t ignore his early career, which is why he’s the best. Oh, one detail: that day we won the program and brought a brand new ambulance for our social projects. We came back the next year and won again.

Have you been with Silvio other times?

Two more times. I was happy to know that she was watching me in Band. She praised my voice and posture in presenting the programs. I remember your words: ‘You are very serious, I like you’. I don’t even need to say how much it meant to me.

Have you negotiated to work at SBT?

I was at the station at the time of the restructuring of the Casos de Família program, but we made no progress in the conversation. Doing shit on TV has never been my thing.

What do you think of Silvio’s exit from television?

You know, I keep imagining Silvio at home, watching everything, giving opinions and advice. I can’t see him stopping because he was born for this great donation to the public, but we must respect his will. We know that Sunday will never be the same and there is nothing that can fill that void. Silvio is unique, period. Wish…

You have reached 50 years of career as a communicator. What evaluation?

I analyze it with great pride. I would start all over again. A great life lesson. What a wonderful profession it is that puts me in contact with such interesting people every day, who only enrich my life. I am proud to be a woman of the last century who has overcome machismo, difficulties in carrying out daily tasks and today enjoys this technology and agility to transmit information and entertainment responsibly.

Do you agree that professional journalism is undermined by the excess of fake news and the actions of harmful communicators?

I’m sure. This makes me sad. There is no light, things only get worse. How can there be so much irresponsibility in speaking, presenting, writing, transmitting information? The internet is wonderful, but it gives voice and space to so many idiots. It’s a lack of respect, it seems like a no man’s land, this thing needs to change. We are regressing and my concern now is about the next elections. Have a stomach.

After going through Band, RedeTV!, Gazeta and other channels, you are now on TV Evangelizar. What’s new in your career?

We set off to meet people and learn new recipes from the Brazilian people. We are also preparing to broadcast our programming in Rio de Janeiro starting in July. TV Evangelizar already reaches the homes of over 90 million Brazilians. It’s nice to grow together, open new paths. This is what making television is: never stopping dreaming and creating.
