How friendly Minions became bolsominions in Brazil

The arrival of “Minions 2 – The Origin of Gru” in theaters this Thursday (30/6) brings back the small, clumsy yellow creatures, who became popular after appearing as secondary characters in “Despicable Me” (2010). The success made the Minions part of 21st century pop culture, prompting the creation of toys, games, clothing, accessories and a number of their own films, as well as a “political movement”. In Brazil, the friendly little creatures originated the term “bolsominion” to name the unsympathetic followers of Jair Bolsonaro.

In the movies, the Minions are devoted followers of their master, a villain with the intention of taking over the world. They have already followed Dracula, Napoleon and, in the story that unfolds after “Despicable Me”, the evil Gru. The analogy with Bolsonaro’s followers also occurs due to the color of the children, yellow like the CBF shirt, used on a large scale in demonstrations in favor of Bolsonaro. In addition, the devotion of the Minions is so great that there is no dispute, even in the face of absurd and highly questionable situations.

The term “bolsominion” has no definite authorship, but after it emerged, it became an instant meme and was quickly incorporated into the country’s daily vocabulary, being adopted by people of every political spectrum, including the bolsominions themselves, proud of the name. If opponents use the unconditional minion devotion to expose an uncritical and conniving stance, Bolsonaro’s supporters are committed to precisely extolling their leader’s devotion to the cause.

A quick look at this Thursday’s Twitter timeline (30/6) highlights the use of the term by several people, including singer Otto, influencer Felipe Neto, journalist Guga Noblat, among many others, to criticize the government. On the other hand, many other people consider themselves “bolsominion with great pride”, such as Councilor Jessicão, from Londrina / PR, who on Sunday (26/6) posted a tweet in which he greeted all the bolsominions and obtained more than 2,000 Likes, 60 replies and 200 retweets to the interaction.

Anyway, in “Minions 2 – The Origin of Gru”, it is shown with multiple reasons why the Minions follow as a hit with all audiences, regardless of political predilections.
