This Monday (06), international and national celebrities will walk the red carpet of Metropolitan Museum of Art with their iconic looks. Fashion’s biggest night begins on the museum’s historic steps, with its red carpet stretching down the stone stairs, transforming the historic site into a different photo opportunity.
What is this year’s theme and who are the co-presidents?
This year, the red carpet theme is “The Garden of Time,” which references British author JG Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. Like the New Wave science fiction story set in a garden of time-altering flowers, the museum’s exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Awakening Fashion,” highlights the connections between nature and technology, using artificial intelligence, CGI and other tools breathing new life into hundreds of fragile archive pieces spanning hundreds of years.
The theme is chosen each year by Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute. The first celebrities to appear are the Gala’s co-chairs, including Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, who is making his Met Gala debut.
Although the red carpet and after-parties get the evening’s most attention, the gala is, first and foremost, a fundraiser, whose five-figure tickets raise millions of dollars for the museum each year, setting a record on Wednesday.
