According to her, the choking maneuver was carried out by a man who was in the bakery where Loma and her daughter were.

“Melanie had eaten coxinha before, but it had never happened like this. I think when she ate it, she choked in the back of her throat. It was a nightmare. The euphoria has passed, but I am distressed. I have never experienced this in my life, it was the worst thing in the world,” she added.

What to do in case of choking

According to the Brazilian Association of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (ABORL-CCF), choking is responsible for 53% of childhood accidents worldwide and, in Brazil, one of the leading causes of pediatric death.

The most recommended approach in case of suffocation in people over one year of age is to perform the Heimlich maneuver, which consists of hugging the person from behind and performing compressions with one open hand on the other with the closed fist in the “mouth” of the stomach, that is, in the region between the navel and the beginning of the ribs.

For newborns, like Loma, experts recommend supporting the baby on your forearm or thigh, with the head down and chin resting. Then, create a hook to open the baby’s mouth and touch the baby’s back 5 times with your hand. Then, turn the baby face up and use two fingers to squeeze the area between the nipples.

If the object or piece of food appears, it is recommended to gently remove it from the child’s mouth. The recommendation is to call specialized medical assistance, such as the fire department – even if the unlocking maneuver is already in progress.
