Former sports presenter says global group seeks ‘other standards’ to be at the forefront of programming
Presenter Janaína Xavier believes she was fired from the SporTV channel because she was “too pretty” and that the group Globe I was looking for “other standards”, like black and “full” women.
“In the rush to show diversity, when the question is to hire a woman or a man, they choose the woman. A black woman or a white woman, they choose the black one. She is full and out of the ordinary, the other one is very beautiful, man… let’s go first,” he said.
She added that she began to feel excluded because of her appearance.
“I felt like I was treated like ‘you’re too pretty to be here’ and then there was that whole ‘fuller’ girl thing. Everyone sees beauty differently, people. I’m not saying the fuller girl is not beautiful. Far from it, I’m speaking from their perspective,” she said in a podcast interview. Benja Me Mucho.
Who is Janaina Xavier?
Janaina was fired after 23 years of contract with Grupo Globo. Since 2018, she has been responsible for programs broadcast on SporTV. Her first experience with the group dates back to 1999, when she competed for a position in the weather forecasting sector at RPC, the station’s subsidiary in Paraná.
At the time, in an interview with UOL, she said she lost her job because she was considered “cross-eyed”. The boss then chose her as a sports journalist in Paraná.
Her attrition with the broadcaster began when she returned from maternity leave, at the age of 43, when she realized that the profile of new hires had changed.
In the podcast, she said she was replaced by colleague Mariana Fontes. “I suffered and was hurt more by the people of the channel than by the company itself. I felt heavy. After I was fired, people disappeared,” she said in the interview.
The presenter does not regret her speech
In an interview with F5 this Thursday 18, Janaina says she has no regrets for justifying her dismissal because she was “too pretty”. “I regret the alienation of those who look at the cuts and criticize without listening to the whole thing, and the worst are those who call themselves journalists and publish false and irresponsible headlines”, she says.
