Kevin Spacey pleads not guilty to sexual abuse charges in England

American actor Kevin Spacey pleaded not guilty this Thursday (14/7) in the preliminary hearing of the sexual abuse trial that is pending against him in British justice.

He is accused of sexually abusing three men between 2005 and 2013 in London and Gloucestershire, one of them twice, as well as engaging in “sexual activity with penetration without consent”, according to a complaint filed by the British Special Crimes Division. Crown Power of Attorney. CPS).

A man in his forties said he was sexually assaulted by Spacey twice in March 2005. Another man, in his thirties, said the crime against him took place in August 2008. Both would have occurred in London. The Gloucestershire victim, also in her thirties, said she was sexually abused in April 2013.

He responds to the trial in freedom, for having voluntarily presented himself in England and being ready to collaborate with the justice system. The trial itself will only begin in June next year, with an estimated duration of between three and four weeks.

Despite his plea of innocence, with current complaints more than 20 of men accusing Spacey of sexual harassment, abuse and assault in the period between 1995 and 2013. During this period, many of the accusers were minors, such as the first whistleblower , actor Anthony Rapp (“Star Trek: Discovery”), who, publicly blaming Spacey, has embarked on a dizzying career change for the two-time Academy Award winner (for “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty”).

After the first few complaints, the 62-year-old actor was summarily fired from the “House of Cards” series, with members of the production joining in the allegations of harassment, and had a movie ready as a star sheltered by Netflix. The platform preferred to lose money rather than post another job with him as the protagonist.

Additionally, director Ridley Scott has decided to re-shoot “All the Money in the World” to remove the actor from the film, which was already over when the scandal broke. He was replaced by Christopher Plummer, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of him.

But Spacey was also very lucky. Two accusers who prosecuted him died before their cases reached the courts. Norwegian writer Ari Behn, ex-husband of the Princess of Norway, committed suicide at Christmas 2019, three months after the sudden death of a masseuse accusing the actor.

Finally, he had another lawsuit, filed by a boy who was 18 at the time of the harassment, abruptly withdrawn on the eve of the trial.

Thanks to the lack of conviction, Spacey was able to return to acting. He starred in an Italian film, “L’Uomo che Disegnò Diò”, directed and starring star Franco Nero, and played a villain in the low-budget film “Peter Five Eight”, which was brought to the Marché du Film, the Business of the Cannes Film Festival, to obtain international distributors.

The new complaints should keep these films unreleased, or at least preserved for a long time.
