Theo Lengyel, founding member of the avant-garde jazz-metal group Mr. Bungle, was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend, Alice ‘Alyx’ Kamakaokalani Herrmann.
A jury in Santa Cruz, California found the 55-year-old rocker guilty of first-degree murder and now awaits sentencing.
What did Theo Lengyel do to Alice Kamakaokalani?
According to Rolling Stone, police in Capitola, in the same state, arrested Theo Lengyel on January 3, a month after Alice Kamakaokalani disappeared on December 3, 2023.
The remains of ‘Alyx’ were later found in a wooded area of Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley, after her relatives reported that they had not heard from her.
The car of the 61-year-old woman was found outside the house of the musician, who was accused of what happened with her partner.
“As the investigation progressed, it became apparent that a crime had occurred, and Theobald was identified as a suspect,” authorities said in a statement.
In August, the trial against the saxophonist began. On September 22, prosecutors in the case discovered revealing audio, according to the Associated Press.
In this footage, which was played in court on October 1, Kamakaokalani can be heard pleading for his life after an altercation with Lengyel.
The recording begins with him playing the piano before getting angry because he doesn’t want to go outside to go to the pool to play, claiming he has to work the next day, reports the Daily Mail.
“I could crush your fucking brains,” says Theo, at 9:53 p.m., in the first of his threats as the fight continues.
“When you drink, these things happen, we fight,” Alice replied, only to hear him bully her into disappearing her dog “to show you how I could kill you.”
After telling him to leave the house, he grabbed her and said, “Are you at my mercy right now? You will die now. Are you ready?’
“So. How do you want to die? By blunt force trauma or something? Do you think I should strangle you to death? What do you think?” asks the artist.
“Enough! Do you want your children to be the children of a murderer?” “Enough!” ‘Alyx pleaded with him.’It’s too late for that,’ Lengyel replied.
The search continued with him slowly suffocating her. She gasped and begged him, a total of 43 times, to stop.
“Why should I stop?” Theo replied. British media point out that Kamakaokalani took five minutes of agony to die.
This testimony was found on the victim’s cell phone, lasts three hours, and it is not clear whether she recorded it intentionally or unintentionally.
Theo Lengyel awaits sentencing
Currently, Theo Lengyel remains imprisoned and awaits the punishment he will serve for his actions.
He faces the possibility of life in prison. As of today, the decision is scheduled to be issued in November.
