Alain Delon, icon of French cinema, asks to undergo assisted suicide at 86

Relying on the laws of Switzerland, he wants to end his life as his wife, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2021, could not.

We are aware that the figure of Alain Delon has been somewhat tarnished in recent years by ways, opinions and acts of a sexist, homophobic and retrograde character. It is the weight of age, of the years and of customs that change, almost always for the better, although it affects many for the worse. But, beyond his ideas or attitudes, Alain Delon is one of the greatest figures in world cinema, a legend of French cinema, a timeless handsome man and an icon of style. He is, has been and will be.

protagonist of The silence of a man, The pool, Rocco and his brothers or the gatopardo, when in 2019 he received the honorary award at the Cannes Film Festival, it was when the majority of the media criticized the award, alluding to several more than questionable statements. That same year, with the award in hand, Delon himself said that he began acting for women: “It was the women who loved me who made me get into this profession and who fought for me.” Also, a phrase that is now prescient: “If it weren’t for women, I would have died.”

The legendary heartthrob saw his ex-wife, Nathalie Delon (Francine Canovas), leave forever in 2021 due to pancreatic cancer. When her illness was already irreversible, Nathalie Delon requested euthanasia that she could not obtain given the laws of France. At that time, Delon already advocated on her behalf for the legalization of euthanasia, defending the right of each one to die according to her conditions.

Euthanasia is the most logical and natural. From a certain age and moment, we have the right to quietly leave this world without the support of a hospital or life support devices.

Delon, currently a resident of Switzerland and dual national since 1999, has decided to request assisted suicide for himself. Both the death of his ex-wife and the delicate state of health in which he finds himself after suffering two strokes in recent years have made him make this decision.

Alain Delon has released the news to the world through a statement and his son, Anthony Delon. It seems that the latter will be in charge of being with his father in his last moments, as long as he gets permission from Switzerland, a country that, unlike France, does contemplate assisted suicide. This is Alain Delon’s statement:

I would like to thank everyone who has accompanied me over the years and given me great support, I hope that future actors can find in me an example not only in the workplace, but in everyday life, between wins and losses. Thank you, Alain Delon.

If everything goes according to his wishes, he will leave behind four children and dozens of movies to remember.
