‘Modern Family’: Julie Bowen opens up about her sexuality

“What you do with your body shouldn’t be the first thing people know about or care about. That’s your business.”

Julie Bowen, who plays Claire Dunphy in Modern Family, has opened up about his sexuality. On his Quitters podcast, he said that he “has always been straight,” but there was a time when he fell in love with a woman. He also talked about how people shouldn’t be forced to reveal their sexuality or their private lives if they don’t want to.

“The idea that we start with ‘How do you define yourself?’ and immediately let’s get into what you do in the bedroom. I’m straight. I’ve always been straight. I had a crush on a woman for a while, but she didn’t love me back. He liked women, but he didn’t like me in that way.. … never really caught on, so I never had to question my concept of sexuality,” she explained. “What you do with your body shouldn’t be the first thing people know about or care about. That’s your business,” she added.

These words ring especially good now that Kit Connor, the actor from heartstopperquit Twitter after being accused of “queer baiting”, after which he was forced to come out publicly and explain that he was bisexual.

“I’m going back for a moment to say I’m bisexual. Congrats on forcing an 18 year old out of the closet,” she wrote. “I think some of you have missed the point of the series. Goodbye.”

Since then, she has received an avalanche of support from her fans and colleagues, including the creator of heartstopperAlice Oseman: “I really don’t understand how people can see heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating on sexualities and judging based on stereotypes,” he tweeted. “I hope all those people are fucking embarrassed. Kit, you’re amazing.”
