Andrew Garfield, On Being Spider-Man At 26: “It Was A Ton Of Shit To Take On”

“With great power comes great responsibility.” Andrew Garfield’s spider-sense kicked in under the weight of being Spider-Man.

We are still in shock about the return of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ with Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland (This isn’t a spoiler anymore, is it?), but even though Andrew has already played the part, playing the spider superhero for the first time at the age of 26 was a huge responsibility for him. And it is that, you know, “with great power comes great responsibility“. Uncle Ben already said it.

In a new interview with G.Q.the Oscar nominee said accepting the role in some of the best Spider-Man movies was life-changing for him at such a young age and was “an interesting experience, for sure.”

“I was 26 years old and I was like: ‘Damn, this is a lot to take on. It’s a ton of shit to take on‘” Garfield said. “And I wanted to take it on. He was ready. I was prepared. He didn’t feel heavy. But I think there were elements that felt very… I felt danger to myself, in terms of fame and exposure”. The spider sense?

“Even when I accepted [‘The Amazing Spider-Man’]I thought, ‘I want to make sure I can do ‘Angels in America’ and ‘Death of a Salesman’ in a few years’ time.’” She continued. “First I want to be a theater actor. If I can do theater for the rest of my life for an audience of 50 people a night, I know my life will be fulfilling.. That’s not me being glib, I just know. If everything else fell apart… I would rent an apartment in London and I could do theater”.

Garfield originally played the superhero in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, both directed by Marc Webb. The latter title was a flop among critics and fans alike, forcing Sony to discontinue the Garfield franchise and partner with Disney to Bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland. Garfield has later stated that he would be interested in doing another Spider-Man movie after No Way Home, though only “if he feels right” in terms of the script.

“Peter Parker and Spider-Man are all about service to the community, service for the greater good,” Garfield said. “He is a working-class boy from Queens who knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. He would try to borrow Peter Parker’s ethical framework in the sense that, If there was an opportunity to step back and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very confident in myself.“.
