The musician described the process of composing the song “Here Today”, which he wrote in honor of the Beatles’ partner

Paul McCartney remembered the mourning process through which he passed after the assassination of John Lennonhis friend and former partner of Beatlesin 1980.

“It was hard for everyone in the world because he was such a loved person and such a crazy guy. He was very special,” the singer said during a recent interview with The Beatles channelmusic channel of the North American radio station SiriusXM.

“It hit me so much I couldn’t talk about it,” McCartney continued, explaining that she was uncomfortable attending the worldwide tributes and the collective mourning that followed.

“I remember coming home from the studio the day we heard the news of his death, turning on the TV and seeing people say, ‘well, this was John Lennon’ and ‘whatever it was, this was it’ and, ‘ I remember meeting him at a similar time,'” she said.

“He was like, ‘I don’t know, I can’t be one of those people. I can’t just go on TV and say what John meant to me.’ It was too deep. It was just too much. I couldn’t put it into words,” she explained.

Lennon was murdered by a fan in December 1980. At that time, McCartney was preparing his solo album tug of warreleased in 1982.

According to the artist, when the emotions calmed down, he was able to process the loss of his friend by writing the song. Here todaypresent on the disc. The song shows hypothetical answers that Lennon would give to McCartney’s questions.

“I was in a building that was going to be my recording studio and there were just a few empty rooms upstairs,” he recalled. “So I found a room, sat down on the hardwood floor in the corner with my guitar and started playing the first chords of Here today🇧🇷

The singer also quoted an excerpt from the song, which reads “And the night we cried / Why was there no reason to keep it all inside?”.

According to him, this part refers to a night spent in Key West, Florida, USA, when they had postponed the shows due to the local weather.

“For some reason I think it was a hurricane, something delayed and we couldn’t play for a few days,” he recalled. “We holed up in a little motel. What were we going to do? Well, we drank and got drunk. We didn’t have a game, so we did it. That night we got drunk and started getting emotional. It all came out.”

“We shared some truths. ‘Well, I love you. I love you man,’ ‘I love that you said that. I love it.’ And we opened up. So that was kind of special for me. I think it was really one of the only times that that ever happened,” she said.
