Former King Constantine II of Greece passed away on January 10. Today inCathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary A farewell ceremony was held in Athens, which was attended by leading representatives of European monarchies, including the British Royal Princess Anne, King and Queen Philip VI of Spain and Letizia, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who last year deprived her grandchildren of their titles, as well as Prince Albert II of Monaco other.


Constantine II is considered the last Greek monarch from the Glücksburg dynasty. In a referendum in 1973, the results of which the king never recognized, the monarchy was abolished and Greece became a republic. Until 2013, Constantine lived in London, where he maintained a close relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and the current King Charles III.
Note that Constantine II — far from a stranger to the British royal family. He was a cousin to the late Prince Philip and godfather to William, Prince of Wales. William, in turn, became godfather to his first grandson Constantine-Alexios.
