The third day of Paris Fashion Week brings the latest news from Burberry. Riccardo Tisci is stepping down from his role as the brand’s chief creative officer at the end of September. He will be replaced by Daniel Lee, who most recently worked for the Bottega Veneta brand.

Burberry’s announcement Wednesday morning confirms rumors that have been swirling for the past month. After almost five years with the British brand, Riccardo Tisci presented his latest collection in London. He postponed its performance from the original date to Monday, September 26, due to the official mourning of the United Kingdom after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Despite the change in date, the catwalk and audience were packed with stars, including Naomi Campbell, Bella Hadid and Kanye West.

Burberry is a very special place with a magical past and a very promising future. The chapter I was meant to write in her long story is one I’m incredibly proud of, and I’ve decided it will culminate in my collection this Monday.” stated Riccardo Tisci in an official statement a few days before the show. He also said that he encouraged creativity and diversity in his collections to keep Burberry moving forward.

At the start, Tisci’s era at Burberry was marked by social media turmoil, product declines and a new logo – plus high expectations from executives to turn the brand around. However, the pandemic in 2020 had a great impact on the aforementioned strategy, which only began to turn positive at the turn of 2021 and 2022. Despite the fashion house’s official satisfaction with the chief creative designer, in August of this year, news of negotiations with Daniel Lee regarding the position chief creative officer of the brand.

Riccardo played a key role for Burberry,” stated Jonathan Akeroyd, CEO of Burberry, in his own statement. “He has refined our creative language, modernized and elevated our product offering and brought a new generation of luxury customers to our brand. On behalf of everyone at Burberry, I would like to thank him for his creative leadership and wish him the best for the future.”

Daniel Lee takes up his new role as creative director of Burberry on Monday 3 October and will be based in London. His three-year tenure at Bottega Veneta, which ended somewhat abruptly in the fall of 2021, was short but impressive, catapulting the brand (especially its leather goods) back into the mainstream of the fashion market. His track record of creating commercially successful products makes him a highly sought after designer.

“Together with the team, we will write the next exciting chapter for this legendary British luxury brand, continuing its storied legacy and building on Riccardo’s legacy,” Lee said in a statement. “I am very excited to be returning to London, a city that fosters pioneering creativity and continues to inspire me.”

Prior to his time at Bottega Veneta, he worked as ready-to-wear design director at Celine under Phoebe Philo. Daniel Lee’s first Burberry collection will premiere at London Fashion Week in February.

Daniel is an exceptional talent with a unique understanding of today’s luxury consumer and a strong commercial track record, and his appointment reinforces the ambitions we have for Burberry.” Akeroyd stated.
