Green tea named top morning drink for male heart health

Green tea is the single best morning drink for men to protect their heart and blood vessels, according to dietitians cited by health publication EatingWell.

Although mortality from heart disease has dropped over the last 50 years, the condition remains the primary public health threat for both men and women. Lauren Slayton, a registered dietitian holding a master of science degree, stated that heart disease is the leading cause of death across sexes, with statistics indicating that roughly one in four deaths among men is linked to cardiovascular disease.

Medical experts note that about 80 percent of heart disease cases and strokes can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices. Vicki Shanta Retelny, a registered dietitian nutritionist, explained that managing heart health requires controlling key risk factors such as weight gain, particularly excess abdominal fat, while keeping blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels within normal ranges.

Cardiovascular benefits of green tea catechins

Dietitians highlight green tea as the top beverage choice for men seeking to improve cardiovascular wellness. Michelle Rautenstein, a dietitian specializing in preventive cardiology, said green tea contains catechins, notably epigallocatechin gallate, known as EGCG, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Rautenstein noted that while some studies suggest green tea can lower oxidative stress and enhance vascular function, evidence regarding its effect on specific inflammatory markers remains mixed.

Research indicates that EGCG offers a triple benefit for heart health by helping lower triglycerides, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol. The compound may block fat absorption in the intestines, which can potentially improve triglyceride counts and reduce insulin resistance.

Lifestyle habits and blood pressure control

Shanta Retelny cautioned that while green tea provides cardioprotective effects through high levels of EGCG, a person's broader diet and daily habits play a far greater preventive role. She emphasized that green tea drinkers often maintain healthier routines that protect the heart, including avoiding smoking, consuming fewer highly processed foods, eating more whole foods, and engaging in regular physical activity.

The beverage also assists in lowering high blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of stroke. One study demonstrated that taking EGCG supplements helped relax blood vessels and decrease arterial stiffness, resulting in lower blood pressure readings.

Additional dietary guidance for heart health

EatingWell also highlighted previous dietary advice from health experts regarding heart wellness and fitness. Scientists previously reported that consuming a single handful of nuts each day can improve heart function and lower the risk of developing specific diseases. Furthermore, experts explained that eating fruit serves as a simple, convenient pre-workout snack that delivers carbohydrates to fuel physical exercise.
